(CBS) In the Persian Gulf, in late July 1996, American warships, a full complement of military hardware, and nearly 4,000 Marines, sailors and SEALs, were praying they could pull off the mission of their lives. They had been assigned to grab the man, who before September 11th, had killed more Americans than any other terrorist.

His name is Imad Mugniyah, and U.S. intelligence believed they had tracked him to the waters of the Persian Gulf, aboard a merchant ship, the Ibn Tufail.

Marine commander John Garrett helped plan this top-secret mission to take down the ship, and take Mugniyah into custody. This is the first time he has ever talked about it publicly. In fact, no one involved has ever talked about it, until now. Dan Rather reports.

“If we’re going to take down a ship, as in this case, you would like to have some sort of scare factor, a fly-over, low down, by jets,” he says. “Maybe even a strafing run or something off to the side. Simultaneously accompanied by a boarding of the vessel from the air which could be helicopters hovering and then fast-roping down to a spot that’s been picked on the deck

Reagan should have shot down the plane carrying the terrorists who attacked the ship and dumped the wheelchair bound Jewish man into the sea. This is no defense of Clinton, but we have to be ruthless with these characters. They interpret our overly sensitive attitude as weakness. We should show them something else.

The Marine barracks were a Pearl Harbor waiting to happen. That was very careless by itself. We should make it clear when we station troops that we expect to provide total security for them or we take our people elsewhere. Ditto the Saudi attack.

What a load of road appples. This sort of thing was Clinton's M.O. ... the more likely the target was real, the more likely Clinton was to get cold feet. His objective was to discredit the US and he did it very, very well.

Out of fear, or more likely, out of a desire to be a wartime president, he tried everything he could to get things to explode for the sake of his legacy building.

SentryoverAmerica, I almost always agree with your post, But I have to disagree with you on this one. Bill Clinton might have gotten away from prosecution and justice during his term in office (some might even argue that). But history and the facts will deliver the justice we could not. Bill Clinton will learn the lesson of truth. He can run from it, He can hide from it, but it's always there, and in the end.... It always wins.

He's smiling every time he looks at his growing bank account, every time he thinks about the crimes he committed and got away with and every time he ponders the strings he still pulls in the democRAT party.
