I received the following email today, did you?

NOTE: This email contains information about your PhotoPoint account:

Account Name: XXXXXXXXXX
Account Password: XXXXXX

This is a one time email, and you will not be put on any mailing lists.

As of December 14th, 2001, Pantellic Software, creators, owners, and operators of PhotoPoint.com were forced to cease operations due to financial reasons. PhotoPoint Corp USA similarly entered Assignment for the Benefit of Creditors in July of 2001.

There are currently no plans to bring PhotoPoint.com back online, although we are always interested in discussions from interested business partners for doing so.

CD Ordering Now Available ------------------------- Due to the demand, as a means for members to get copies of their photos, we have arranged for them to be able to purchase CD's of their PhotoPoint accounts. As Pantellic is insolvent, this is being done by a third party.

This offer a short term offer, and will only be extended until May 31st, 2002. All orders must be placed by this time (and payment received by June 15th at the latest). The cost of a CD is $24.95 USD plus $9.95 USD shipping and handling, and includes all of your photos, captions, and guestbook entries. (This is half the price of archive CD's avaialble from other photo sharing sites.)

CD's may be ordered by visiting http://www.photopoint.com

Your account information is as follows: Account Name: XXXXXXXXXXXXXX Account Password: XXXXXXXXX Number of Photos: 320 Size of Account: 12733 K

You may go directly to ordering a CD for your "XXXXXXXX@XXXXXX" account by going to this link:

http://cd.photopoint.com/perl/order.pl?email=XXXXXX@XXXXXX com&password=XXXXXXX&step=2

If this link does not work for you, just visit http://www.photopoint.com and follow directions for ordering the CD, and enter your email address and password above when prompted.

We appreciate your patience and understanding, and hope that this option is useful to people who may have neglected to keep their original copies.

What really upsets me, is that I hear the owner of Photopoint is a FloriDUH Freeper....Now what's up with that?
Not sure if Dale Gass (CEO of the now-defunct Pantellic Software) visits this forum, but I know that Michael R. Tomkins (reporter for The Imaging Resource) does, at times, using the screen name hkdragon2.

PhotoPoint: Deadline extended!
By Michael R. Tomkins, The Imaging Resource
(Thursday, May 2, 2002 - 22:34 ET)
...The deadline for ordering backups of images (which include the captions and guest book entries) has been extended from April 30th through to May 31st 2002, due to problems getting emails out to members advising them of the chance to get their albums back. This is, according to the site, the last chance to retrieve those lost memories - orders must be received by May 31st and paid for by June 15th. If you have been hesitating, think now - you haven't much longer to decide!

PhotoPoint: Archive CD's finally available! (UPDATED)
By Michael R. Tomkins, The Imaging Resource
(Friday, April 5, 2002 - 14:20 ET)

...UPDATED 2002-04-07 16:19ET: Dale Gass, CEO of the now-defunct Pantellic Software (and an understandably difficult man to get hold of recently - we're sure he's flooded with emails), replied with comments on this news item. He firstly noted that the ordering page was ambiguous and has been updated. The cost of backing up an account onto CD is per account, and not per CD required - our item has been updated in several places to reflect this fact, and our thanks to Dale for clarifying this.

Dale also noted that one of the reasons for the significantly higher shipping cost than found from other online photo-sharing sites is due to the fact that all CDs are being sent via trackeable shipping methods:
"Regarding the shipping pricing; we decided to go with a *trackable* option, to avoid any confusion about lost or missing CD's; we thought this important as it is likely a bit of a "last chance" for people to get their photos, and we wanted to make sure everyone had them in their hands.

Unfortunately, shipping costs from Canada to the US are rather high; to California is $14, shipping Canada Post Expedited. The other shipping options are only slightly less expensive, and don't allow for tracking or receipt confirmation. The volume of expected orders just isn't high enough for us to get any significant pricing break.

Similarly, our inquiries into pricing for shipping to Europe were similarly shocking; close to $25 to ship to England, similar pricing for Germany, in the two examples we priced out. So far, we've only had a single inquiry from overseas; we will do what it takes to find a way to help out folks overseas. It depends upon the level of interest, and the sampling of countries represented, to determine how we proceed, though. I think it's safe to say we will find some way for international members to get their photos back. Judging from the relatively small demand, it will probably be handled on a case-by-case basis."
