In 1953, the United Nations was eight years old. I had covered it almost every day of its existence as reporter for The New York Times. I wrote a book at the time on the UN's record and its prospects. I've just reread that book and found it warm toward the organization and cautiously hopeful about its ability to help keep the peace and lift the poor and diseased from the eternal swamp of their existence.
At the end, I listed its failures up to that year. It had not brought peace to the world or food to the starving or freedom to all the oppressed. But it was made by humans, I wrote, who cannot produce miracles in eight years.
I believed then — as I do now — that each person and each nation has to make a choice between living in the jungle and trying to clear it. I think my optimism about the UN was a justified judgment in 1953.
But now it is imperative to make another: The UN has become part of the jungle, darkening the view of the sun and creating more hate in the mind of mankind.
The UN is not a creature unto itself. It is the instrument of the member countries and a secretariat headed by the secretary general and his top echelon of staffers. The latter are supposed to be the servants of the delegations. But they have learned how to manipulate the machinery of the organization far better than the delegates.
Among their recent choices, they expelled the United States from the UN Commission on Human Rights for a year until we were allowed to creep back in a few days ago. During that year, four of the seven countries on the UN list of terrorist states sat on the commission.
Secretary General Kofi Annan and his entourage also chose to let Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein destroy the UN inspection team that was supposed to comb his country for nuclear, chemical and bacteriological weapons, allowing him to push ahead with the manufacture of those weapons. Why else do you suppose the Bush administration is making it clear that it intends to attack Iraq again? It wants to get Saddam's head before he has those weapons ready for use.
The UN has refused to criticize human rights violations in China, Syria, Yemen, Iran and other garden spots. There are no UN reports condemning the violation of human rights by Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat's collection of terrorist gangs and not an official word said about suicide bombers. At the same time, the UN has created a whole industry of commissions and committees devoted to vilifying Israel for the benefit of countries that want to destroy it.
The major agenda of the UN now is not stopping the spread of nuclear weaponry, ending hunger or fighting terrorism. It is Israel and how to hurt it most. The Muslim bloc can easily muster the oil money to promote hate-Israel votes at the UN. And the UN hands out hundreds of millions of dollars to the Palestinians. If politically it is any one thing, the UN is a tower of hatred toward Israel.
Support at the UN for terrorist states and movements comes not only from Arab interests — there also is sideline help from Europeans, Africans and assorted dictatorships.
The United States and some other countries could be expected to be at least as faithful to Israel as, say, France is to the Syrian torture tyranny. But they spend much of their time in stumble, bumble, fiddle and fear.
President Bush, in the name of decency and patriotism, should bring back Daniel Patrick Moynihan and tell him to kick ass again against bigotry. Some three decades ago, when he was our ambassador to the UN, Moynihan was famous for his blunt truth-telling and lacerating denunciations of hypocrisy. Oh, how we need those qualities again!
Once that healthful exercise is over, the President should take the mike and announce that the U.S. is withdrawing from the UN — not quitting, but withdrawing for whatever time Bush decides, say a year. We would pay our dues during that time, because we are obliged to do so unless we quit permanently.
That would leave such honorable members as Saddam with the realization that we might come back in and use every pressure we have to reform the UN fundamentally. Reforms such as: Any speech or resolution that promoted racial and religious hatred would be punished by temporary exclusion of the delegation involved and formal UN denunciation. Terrorist nations would not be merely listed, but tossed out.
A cleaner, smaller UN would be a club of the friends of freedom. It would lead us to a safer world. It would be a United Nations we could admire, not fear. And if we had to fight, we would be fighting alongside our real allies, with our enemies blocked from picking us off from the inside.

The "withdrawal' and not quitting may be very politically correct, but I say a permanent withdrawal is at hand for the very survival of our country.
The problem is not the current Sec-Gen, the problem is the UN itself. Rosenthal says the US should withdraw for a time and keep paying its dues. Wrong, wrong, wrong. The US, UK, Canada, Austrailia, Israel, India and any other country with an ounce of sense should quit the UN, quit paying UN taxes, and boot the UN and all its organs out of their respective countries. Move the HQ to some garden spot like Mogadishu.
Agreed, but it would be a good start. At this point, any action is better than none at all.

De-fund, Denounce, Deport, Disarm, Disband!
Then run the old UN out of this country and step back for the Free World to sign up.
Dream on. The UN is structurally unaccountable and it starts with the Charter, essentially a communist document. It states that all rights are subject to the purposes of the UN, not unalienable, not superior to government, but disposable at a mere bureaucratic whim. The UN was started by communists, it is run by communists toward communist ends and the US and Israel are the targets of a carefully guided mob of corrupt dictatorships. That is the nature of democracy, whether of nations or of people. The population control and environmental programmes are anti-human and serve only the interests of the wealthy elites who can buy the NGOs that serve to institute policy by international law and the courts.
The purpose of the UN was to be a way to supercede the Constitution and enact an agenda of global domination, it was designed by Americans to enslave Americans and use our power toward ends destructive to us. It is a creature of the RINOcrat party and we should do everything we can to either return it to its role as a venue for negotiation or end it.
So let's hear it for the un-flag:
