Bush holds fast to support of Palestinian state

WASHINGTON - President George W. Bush (news - web sites) held fast Monday to his support of a Palestinian state, possibly foreshadowing a sharp dispute with Israel and its dominant Likud party.
The hard-line coalition voted Sunday in favor of a resolution never to allow the creation of a Palestinian state, defying Prime Minister Ariel Sharon (news - web sites) who had said he could support statehood under certain limited conditions.
"The president continues to believe that the best route to peace is through the creation of the state of Palestine and side by side security with Israel," White House spokesman Ari Fleischer (news - web sites) said in response to Likud's decision.
While Bush did not back off, his chances of spurring peace talks between Israel and the Palestinian Authority (news - web sites) may have dimmed. And getting cooperation from its leader Yasser Arafat (news - web sites) on security could now be more difficult.
Bush had held out the prospect of statehood as incentive to Arafat and the Authority to lower tensions with Israel and harness suicide bombers. He also has promised a worldwide campaign to generate assistance to the Palestinian people.
So ingrained had administration acceptance of Palestinian statehood become that Bush's assistant for national security, Condoleezza Rice (news - web sites), and Undersecretary of State Marc Grossman made almost matter-of-fact references to "Palestine" in speeches last week to the American Jewish Committee.
Bush was the first U.S. president to explicitly endorse establishment of a Palestinian state on land the Arabs lost in their war with Israel in 1967.
Bush's predecessor, Bill Clinton, had propsed a settlement between Israel and the Palestinians that envisioned statehood. Last week, Clinton explicitly backed statehood.
Sharon has said a Palestinian state is inevitable. And at a meeting with Bush earlier in the year at the White House he said there could be a state if other conditions were met.
Fleischer affirmed Bush's continuing support for a Palestinian state in a meeting with reporters at the White House even while insisting he did not "comment in international domestic politics."
"Every nation has its share of internal domestic politics," Fleischer said.
The Arab world was upset by the Likud decision. The vote, senior Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat told The Associated Press, "just shows that the war being waged by Israel against the Palestinians is not a war against what they call terror. It's really their war to maintain the occupation of the West Bank and Gaza."
Erekat said the vote was "a real slap in the face" for Bush. Arafat seeks a state on all of the West Bank, Gaza and part of Jerusalem, where he intends to set up his capital. He also seeks the right to relocate millions of Palestinians in what would remain of Israel on the grounds they are descendants of Palestinians forced to feel during the establishment of Israel in 1947-48.

The surest way to bust this economy is to increase the role and the size of the federal government."

Gore offers an old and tired approach. He offers a new federal spending program to nearly every voting bloc. He expands entitlements, without reforms to sustain them. 285 new or expanded programs, and $2 trillion more in new spending. Spending without discipline, spending without priorities, and spending without an end. Al Gores massive spending would mean slower growth and higher taxes. And it could mean an end to this nations prosperity."

"I think the economy has grown really in spite of government. This is an incredible period of time when productivity has been enhanced, not because of any great initiative of government, but because of the ability for entrepreneurs to stake a new claim."

I was deeply concerned about the drift toward a more powerful federal government. I was particularly outraged by two pieces of legislation, the Natural Gas Policy Act and the Fuel Use Act. It seemed to me that elite central planners were determining the course of our nation. Allowing the government to dictate the price of natural gas was a move toward European-style socialism. If the federal government was going to take over the natural gas business, what would it set its sights on next?"

2. There can never be peace with some winding, indefesible boundary trying to divide a Jewish school from a Pallie bomb factory 100 yrds away, etc. There must be a compact, defensible boundary that puts Pallies on the OTHER SIDE of a line running through empty areas, no Pallies anywhere near populated parts of Israel.
3. I suggest the Pallie state be put in Somalia.
So, thus are rewarded the murderers of women and children?
I think thy're about 20 % of the total Parliament. A majority of a minority.
It is too bad President Bush support Hillary's ideas, and Colin Powell's sellout of US ideals.

Hmmm, doesn't charity begin home?
So, President Bush, whadda y'all think about having having the burkha clan over for a barn raisin' and a hoe-down? Yessir and his kin can bring the picnic cloths.
(Now - in his language, "barn raisin'" and "hoe-down" might translate to "barn razin'" and "moe-down" but, what the hay, as long as there's a "Palestine" down on the farmland. They just have a special "homey" kinda way of showin' what "peace-lovin'" folks they'all are.....)
So, whadda y'all say about startin' here, since we're such a generous nation - all ya have to do is link all the towns to make up a state, and since they're already called "Palestine" all ya gotta do is issue a postage stamp, and yee-hah... And, after all, it wouldn't be a "state" of terror, now would it? I'm sure Yessir would give y'all his word.
Now, doesn't that sound like fun? Wonder how you say "Howdy neighbor" in Arabic? Love is the air....or, is that just camel spit? </sarcasm, in case y'all didn't know> Pass the moonshine.
In the meantime, save the Israel mine canary!

23 And in the latter time of their kingdom, when the transgressors are come to the full, a king of fierce countenance, and understanding dark sentences [2420], shall stand up.
24 And his power shall be mighty, but not by his own power: and he shall destroy wonderfully, and shall prosper, and practise, and shall destroy the mighty and the holy people.
25 And through his policy also he shall cause craft [deceit] to prosper in his hand; and he shall magnify himself in his heart, and by peace shall destroy many: he shall also stand up against the Prince of princes; but he shall be broken without hand.

Mark 13:14 But when ye shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing where it ought not, (let him that readeth understand) then let them that be in Judaea flee to the mountains:
And in the streets the children screamed
The lovers cried, and the poets dreamed
But not a word was spoken
The church bells all were broken
And the three men I admire most
The Father, Son and the Holy Ghost
They caught the last train for the coast
The day the music died
Maybe because the Israeli people are so worn down? Can you imagine living under such tension and terror and pressure day after day after day after day...Maybe because they hope things will be better if they appease? Maybe they think of others more than themselves? And, "right-wing" what does that mean? Remember it was Begin who (under extreme pressure from outside parties) called upon the Israeli parliment to give up Sinai. People get tired.
Thank you for posting the pictures, Diogenesis. Never forget!
I just can't see Powell fasting with Bush.
Bravo Bush!
About time we recognized Jordan's right to exist... and the purpose of it's existence.
All I'm saying is that to obtain long term peace there must be a future with some kind of Pali state.
