Second Freeper Postal Match - Rifles
CapandBall | 05/20/02 | CapandBall

Posted on 05/20/2002 4:53:14 PM PDT by CapandBall

Following Free Republic's successful & fun first postal match (How about a Freeper Postal Match?) for pistols, I'm sponsoring a rifle match. A "postal match" is conducted by mail, hence the name "postal" and should not be confused with a contest that involves shooting up your co-workers in a rage.

Shooters in different parts of the country compete against each other in a contest of marksmanship. Shooters are mailed numbered targets which they shoot. The targets are returned via the mail (hence "postal") and scored. Obviously, the honor system comes into play here.

The rules (up to this point) for this match are as follows:

1> A rimfire and a centerfire rifle are required. You will need 30 rounds for each weapon.
2> Iron sights only. No scopes, red-dots, lasers, etc.
3> Diatance is 100 yards.
4> Ten shots each position; standing, sitting, and prone for each type of rifle.
5> Ten minutes for ten shots, each position.
6> The following are not allowed:
...a> match rifles
...b> match ammo
...b> use of spotting scopes between shots
...c> compitition type "cuffed" slings
...d> shooting jackest

You can see the result of the First Freeper Postal Match here: First Freeper Postal Match Results!

There are 6 targets total, all type SR-21, that you will receive in the mail. We have 8 confirmed for this match so far, and need 7 more to fill it out, 15 total. To date I have snail mail addresses for:

Shooter 2.5
NY.SS-Bar9
ctdonath2
umgud
KG9 Kid
chookter
M1911
CapandBall

Freep mail me with a mailing address if you are interested. We had some problems using regular mail in the last match, so I'll probley use priority mail. First come first serve.

Low grain weight boattail hollow points will basically explode when they hit a blade of grass so there is less worry with bullet skip.

I've occasionally "dodged" .22 ricochets from squirrel hunters on a neighbors property (problem solved, no .22s). Ballistic performance aside, there would seem to be a significant safety improvement here. Why couldn’t a similar bullet be designed for .22 or .22 mag?

Safes are one big pain in my back. I think I helped moved seven safes and I move some of them at least three times. The worst was last week when we moved a 850 pound safe into the back of a pickup truck where the bed was four feet high. It was just me and the owner. It helped that both the owner and I have Millwright experience.

Back to topic, I think my '03A3 will be here in a couple of weeks but the order form said 45 to 60 days. I'm being optimistic. I hate to use the Mauser 98K because I think I should use something American for a Freeper Match.

What genius thought of that?

I imagine the Savage legal team. Just like Remington they must be trying to protect themselves from the legalities of all those guns that "just went off by itself".

Here's an article here on Adjusting the Savage 110 Trigger.

I can't comment on the accuracy of the article since I've never had a Savage trigger to modify, but I did follow the Remington instructions and safety was stressed along with improving the trigger.

good luck,

Jim

Lawyers. Now why didn't I think of that?

Thanks for the pointer. I'm going to work with the FP 10 in it's stock config for a bit longer, and then I'm going to be ordering either a Rifle Basix or Sharp Shooter's Supply replacement for it. When I get the new part, then I'll start messing with the stock trigger, so in case I goof it up, I'll have the replacement part at the ready.

I dont know if there is any other caliber besides .22 that is rimfire.

The only other I can think of is .303 that the Enfields used but I'm sure their is a million others.

I am still looking for a fast access - lockable pistol box. I want to keep a pistol handy, but no amount of hiding will prevent a kid from finding something.

Gunvault is the best I've found. Quick access and doesn't look like hell. gunvault.com

My 8mm Mauser has a sling, but I don't know if it's "cuffed" or not... can someone tell me what a "cuffed" sling is?

I hope you've got an opening. You've got freepmail. p.s. my AR is not match and is a carbine with iron sights.

I'm in. I intend to use my CMP Garand and a Ruger 10/22. Should be fun!

I cannot recommend more highly the handgun safes designed and built by R&D Enterprises. These are formed from a single piece of heavy steel, employ a 100% mechanical simplex lock that is quickly operated even in total darkness, and can't be opened with anything short of an oxy-acetalene torch. I've had two of these for years, and they are top of the line.

Want to get a little rifle practice? I am assuming that you have a couple of weapons that meet the criteria.

You're thinking about a rimmed cartridge. The rules for the .22 are for a rimfire cartridge where the primer solution is internally poured into the space inside the rim. The rules for the centerfire ammo is ball ammunition only. Nothing in this contest can be Match Ammunition.

Cuffed slings are two piece slings where the belt goes back and forth to the rifle and then at the arm there is a very wide "cuff" that attaches to the belt. The cuff will have a rubber interior to grab the rubber on the shooting jacket. The rubber to rubber contact with the extra wide surface stops the cuff from shifting. The hook on the jacket stops the belt from slipping down. Now you can see why none of this is legal in this match.

Oh.. Thanks. My 8mm has just an old narrow leather sling that is about one inch wide for the entire length. I don't own a shooting jacket... so I guess I'm ok there.

The cuffed sling is at the front of the mat. To give you and everyone else an idea about this match, nothing in this picture is legal except the timer.

I know the difference between rimless, rimmed, and rimfire but I thought the .303 was a rimfire.

I'm too cheap to buy match grade stuff anyway but when I start reloading maybe I'll fiddle with making some.

Please put me on the bang list for something like this for centerfile rifles and pistols.

I don't have anything in .22 except a little target pistol.

The only difference in .303 is that it might be Bredan primed instead of Boxer primed. The ammo store that I frequent has some metric designated .303 British. I forgot what the numbers are and I can't find the piece of brass that started my search as to who sold the stuff in my area.
