Condit's big crime is that he knew where she was. He probably even met her that day. But the despicable ghoul was afraid of the scandal and afraid of suspicion, and so took the craven path of hiding and silence.
The fact that they've found and talked to him so quickly means that they had him in mind all along. But because there was only speculation and no body until yesterday, there was nothing to tie him to the disappearance.
Two reasons that I can think of.
1. The Levy case up until yesterday was not a murder investigation.
2. The body had not been located at Rock Creek Park before yesterday, so a Rock Creek Park predator wouldn't necessarily be top of the list of people to look at.

You did not read the article very carefully or follow this story from last year. This serial killer suspect has been in the news all along, since before Levy's disappearance. He was mentioned as a possible suspect last year after Levy disappeared.
