NEARING DOOM

May 25, 2002 -- INDIA and Pakistan are within three to four weeks of a foreseeable war that the United States has done too little to prevent. By misreading Gen. Pervez Musharraf, the Bush administration has contributed to a dangerous confrontation between two nuclear-armed rivals. The million troops deployed in the Kashmir theater now balance on a razor's edge. The winter snows that immobilized them for four months are gone. Extreme heat and monsoon conditions will arrive in a month or so in the region, limiting India's logistical capabilities and campaign predictability. India's politically faltering government faces a choice of going to war before that moment - or enduring the embarrassment of ending a costly and seemingly ineffective mobilization.

The problem which nation states now face is that of assymetrical warfare.

Who do we hit and how hard do we hit if we experience homocide bombings in the U.S. ? Do we just suck it up, as India seems advised to do by the world community ? Israel can hit back at dens of terrorists because Israel knows where they originate and the limitations, up to now, of what the terrorsts have in their inventory.

We are all about to enter a perplexing world, a world of the non-peace and the un-war.

a world of the non-peace and the un-war

What a great way of putting it!

Actually, for months now, I have had the feeling that the entire world is essentially doing nothing but waiting for the other shoe to drop. The problem is that it's hard to say when/where it will drop (too many possibilities) or how the battle lines will fall when it happens.

On the face of it, I'd say it would be the entire Muslim world against the non-Muslim world. Yes, I guess that would qualify as "doom." But I have a tendency to pessimism, and hopefully, this is just a product of my over-active imagination.

There may be a few exceptions to 'the entire Muslim world'. In particular secular Turkey seems likely to be neutral at worst in this struggle.

Muslim vs. non-Muslim. BINGO.

What many westerners fail to realize about Islam is that it is NOT just a religion. It is a sociological/economic/political philosophy using "religion" (and I use that word "religion" with the broadest of definitions) bent upon World domination. Convert or die! That is their message.

The sooner the non-Muslim world accepts that the sooner we can defeat destroy this insidious philosophy.

And I for one don't think you are being pessimistic. I think you have a firm grip on reality. There is no other major philosophy that teaches a quick way to heaven/nirvana is to kill "non-believers". Islam at it's core is evil and bent upon our destruction.

The best defense is a swift and overwhelming OFFENSE!

"a world of the non-peace and the un-war." Therein lies the answer, we have no choice but to recruit the undead to settle the matter. Exhume Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi and place them in command of the legions. Maybe a whole new career for Tom Cruise, it seems he could use some help.

Yes. I have a sense of waiting here as well.

Several years ago I took my aunt to visit some friends that she had known for years and gone traveling with. They were a couple in their 80s, but vigorous and sharp. They had been married for 60 years and had gone to Europe for a Church World Youth Convocation in 1939. I asked them if they had had a sense of the immanence of war at that time. They said that everywhere they went in England, Holland, and Denmark, that people had a sense that the other shoe was about to drop.

In my lifetime, I haven't felt the underlying unsettleness of the center not holding as it has since 9-11. The enemies of the settled governed world are seeing their chance and we are in for a fearsome ride.

On a positive note, a few years of nuclear fall (light case of nuclear winter) should shut the global warming chicken littles up for a while...........

Ah yes, the Night of the Living Dead. Tom Cruise seems to have a special talent for those roles - "Interview with a Vampire," "Vanilla Sky," and "Eyes Wide Shut."

The merging of the real and the unreal.

These bombings do have a return address. It's Mecca.
If the Muslims keep it up and scale up their attacks, Mecca will be obliterated and the "faithful" left Kabba-less and directionless.

Yeah right. Turn off the TV once in awhile.

Nuking Mecca, Bagdad, Tehran, Damascus and Mogadishu would still not solve the problem.

Oh yeah, we'd get some of them and feel better but the way I see it is they're already here!

Sure, they get their orders from places in the middle east and europe but their foot soldiers are here!

I would profile every muslim non-citizen as a starting point. All illegal aliens being deported

is a must as well as banning all immigration for an un-specified time.

Even with this we are still vulnerable to attacks but the chances would be dramatically reduced.

Will it happen? Yeah... after the next 9/11.

You are right. If Islam is a religion, then Scientology is a religion.

Your observations are on-target. The Muslims have spread their religion throughout history most effectively at the point of a sword (or gun or airplane or suicide bomber or dirty bomb; take your pick)

But what is most bothersome is that, because of the relativism that is the new civic religion of the USA, we seem to manifest to the Muslims of the world a lack of will to defend ourselves.

That simply emboldens them.

Or Musharraf may be quite willing to see limited clashes begin in hopes of provoking international intervention in Kashmir, much as Yasser Arafat hopes to draw outside powers into his conflict with Israel.

The scale is very different, and *both* sides have nuclear capability. I don't see this strategy working. I don't think India will stop once they start. Musharraf isn't playing with fire, he's playing with nitroglycerin.

You are right.

The question is... How much punishment is the Government willing to allow our Country to absorb BEFORE they act.

I submit that we need to be preemptive.
A major attack using nuclear material or blast would destroy our economy. The Stock Market would tank, taking everything with it.

I've felt it my entire life, but the feeling is much stronger since 9/11. I don't think anyone really wants there to be a nuclear exchange, not even the Indians and Pakistanis, but, as in WWI and to a lesser degree WWII, human nature is winning against human reason: greed, fear, and hate are overwhelming common sense. People in places like India and Pakistan are rationalizing their actions in unreasonable ways, much as I imagine Japan did before attacking the US.

This sort of thing is *very* dangerous, and unless someone can make an emotional appeal strong enough to counteract the rampaging and deep-seated dark emotions that are floating around, eventually the other shoe *will* drop, and, as with WWI, no one can say what the result will be, except that it will be horrible.
