It looks like backhoe has a good start towards a India/Pakistan conflict thread. Since this is one of the areas where FR excells this might be a good thread to start linking some of the best articles to.

I thought on 9/11 that WW III had begun.

I still do.

And I am quite certain that WW III will involve the liquidation of Pakistan, either during the war or as a consequence.

It made no sense in 1948, and it makes no sense now.

Absolutely!

Come on, people- don't be shy! Add links, articles, opinions, comments. Anything at all related to this is fair game.

Jim, are you referring to this?

The separation in 1947 of British India into the Muslim state of Pakistan (with two sections West and East) and largely Hindu India was never satisfactorily resolved.

Just nitpicking here but IMO, historians will perhaps look on the assasination of Ahmad Shah Massoud, Head of the Northern Alliance, on September 9, 2001 as the kickoff date.

I'm not sure the Massoud scenario was coordinated with 9/11.

If so, then I would agree.

Of course, some would pick the day Leon Klinghoffer went swimming, and I'm not sure they're wrong, either.

I believe there's information out there to support the Massoud hypothesis. Be that as it may, I'd go back to the invasion and occupation of Sovereign US territory in Teheran in 1979.

That would be a good point for the present situation, percipitated by Carter's dropping of U.S. support for the Shah. Then there was Pan Am 103 followed by Reagan's having FTD deliver a bouquet to Kadafi's tent, but then the bombing of the marine barracks in Lebanon, the bombing of the towers housing U.S. personnel in Saudi, the first WTC attack. the embassy bombings, then probably the Murrah building and TWA 800, and finally WTC II. Except for Reagan's retaliation against Kadafi and Bush I's Desert Storm, little was done (other than coverup and fake retailiation) until Bush II got serious. Rather than do what he is doing he could have posed it as a criminal action, ala Clinton, rather than doing the courageous thing and taking it to the perpetrators on their own ground. It is nice to have intelligent, brave adults in the WH.
