Bethesda H.S. Seniors Face Ban for Commencement-School Demands Letter of Apology Sent to Condi Rice

Students at Bethesda Chevy Chase High School say their 1st Amendment rights are under attack because they plane to protest NSA advisor Dr. Condoleeza Rice when she speak at their graduation ceremony on June 4.

Students say school administrators are threatening to ban student from the graduation ceremony if they follow through with the protest and have been intimidating for circulating a petition against Rice.

About 1/4 of the senior class signed a petition against having Dr. Rice speak at their graduation ceremony, but the administration still plans to go forward with the event and is demanding that the student government write a letter of apology to Dr. Rice.

Students also say a teacher who is sympathetic to their cause (former Washington Compost Reporter-ed.) has come under fire by the administration.

Some teachers are sympathetic to the cause, most notably Colman McCarthy. McCarthy is not a certified teacher, but has been teaching a class called "Peace Studies" for many years at BCC. It was in his class that the protest was first organized, and he has recently come under fire by the administration for his perceived role as an instigator of student protest.

Bingo! Colman McCarthy, there's the troublemaker. "Peace Studies" in a high school? And he's not even a teacher. Nothing like a leftist in the school to stir up the students.

Wasn't McCarthy the idiot who, being a loud-mouth advocate for gun control, shot some teenagers who were taking a midnight dip in his swimming pool? And then McCarthy had the audacity to claim it was ok for him to do so, but he still believed in DC's TOTAL ban on handguns (just not his own illegal handgun)????
