there are a number of Amish who have served in the military as unarmed medics Wow really? Ya learn something every day. That is really interesting! Seriously. So many times we hear stories of them being so exclusive... apparently they do really have a heart for the outsiders as well.
To: AmishDude
They don't engage in any sort of conflict even at the most interpersonal level. Must make for a boring sex life. ;-)
To: AmishDude
I *did* realize that about the kids though, so the drunken buggy driving by teens didn't surprise me too much.
To: Terriergal
Must make for a boring sex life. ;-)Ever wonder why they never stopped making buggy whips?
And if number of children is proportional to an active sex life, then they do quite well, thank you.
All statements about the Amish are not necessarily reflective of AmishDude or his staff or sponsors.
To: AmishDude
heh heh! Now now!

Despite being committed pacifists, there are a number of Amish who have served in the military as unarmed medics, and have been decorated for valor for saving lives while under fire
What is the difference between a "committed pacifist," and any other sort of pacifist?

Once upon a time, there was a widely held belief that members of the Freemasons would never act against one another . . . . A friend of mine is a Mason. He says that the reason the Masons put the decals and stickers on their cars is because lots of police officers are Masons and they won't write tickets to fellow Masons.
That's his story, anyway.

Instead of allowing Iraqi Republican Guards, and other Islama-losers into the US, we should actively recruit Christian Arabs from the Middle East.
They could be given citizenship in exchange for helping the FBI for a set number of years.

" It resulted in an enduring distrust of anyone connected with the order"
Your posting has very good points and food for thought. I appreciate the well thought out comments.

At the danger of establishing more layers of a federal bloat, this may be a point where the CIA nad FBI need to combined as one agency with seperate divisions, federal and international, but overseen by one command structure. Somewhere along the line, the power of each agency overshadowed the National authority that oversees each, allowing each to operate as its own autonomy.

What is the difference between a "committed pacifist," and any other sort of pacifist? I regard a committed pacifist as someone who will not use deadly force even in self-defense. Then there is the pseudo-pacifist (for example, many of the anti-Vietnam-War protesters) who refuses to fight, but only because he's rooting for the other side -- he'll gladly fight against our side.
To: webstersII
That sounds a little strange. But if I were that person, I would be ashamed to admit it.

The CIA is in the business of advancing the interests of the US government overseas. In so doing, it engages in activities which we do NOT want to be on the receiving end of.
It would be something like combining the police and the Marines. Yes, they both carry guns, but we desire the police to be a bit more observant of the civil rights of the citizenry.

If you are a Muslim, and are willing to act according to the dictates of justice even if a Muslim is the offender and a non-Muslim is the victim, make sure your friends, neighbors, acquaintances and colleagues all know it -I'm guessing that for this theoretical Muslim that would amount to announcing his death wish.
Yup. "Kill one, terrorize a thousand."
One thing about this story: there is no report of this guy going to a desk for the duration. I'm wondering if this might not be part of some disinformation strategery to keep the terrorists guessing.

I know.... and I could tell you more. But they are ZERO threat to our national security. ZERO! They will not fight but they will NEVER lift a finger to destroy our country.
To: Terriergal
They do have many redeeming qualities. BTW, I know an ex-Amish preacher (now a strict Mennonite preacher) who says he still believes in sex only for procreation. But he says he also believes in trying for procreation several times a week! (He is 65 and his wife is 68!!)

I did not mean this as a scolding. Just emphasizing my comments. BTW, I still have the e-mail you sent me a loooongggg time ago!
To: SauronOfMordor
how do you propose elimination of inter-agency rivalry that is also not in the best interests of the country?

This makes no sense. Muslims do record and investigate other muslims. In Muslim countries they do have law enforcement, they do torture and punish and everything else. Hell, they have religious laws. What the hell was wrong with this guy?

What is the difference between a "committed pacifist," and any other sort of pacifist? Committed pacifists don't fight, but do believe in causes and such, they are not cowards by any means. Liberal Pacifists are generally cowards. Even Gandhi drew a distinction between pacifists and cowards. He also later on in life admitted that nonviolence does not always work, it only succeeds when the enemy is not evil and does not seek your destruction.
