Bosnian police raid offices of Islamic charity in growing crackdown on terrorist activity

SARAJEVO, Bosnia-Herzegovina - Police said Tuesday they had raided the offices of an Islamic charity, a move which appeared to form part of a growing crackdown on organizations suspected of having links to terrorist groups.

Police raided two offices of the Al-Haramain Islamic Foundation in Sarajevo on Monday, and a third office in Travnik, some 70 kilometers (40 miles) northwest of Sarajevo, the Interior Ministry said in a statement.

During the raids, officers seized equipment and documents. They also searched the homes of five staff members, and took four employees in for questioning, the ministry said. All four were later released, the ministry added.

The statement provided no further details, and officials could not be reached for comment.

The Al-Haramain Islamic Foundation's offices in Sarajevo were also raided in March as part of a government effort to determine whether any of the foreign charities in Bosnia were sponsoring global terrorism.

Shortly after that raid, U.S. authorities ordered that the assets of Al-Haramain's branches in Bosnia and Somalia be frozen.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Paul O'Neill said at the time that some money from the foundation's offices in Bosnia and Somalia had been diverted to support terrorist activities.

Since the Sept. 11 attacks, Bosnia has joined global efforts to crack down on terrorist activity. The country is home to hundreds of Islamic fighters who came from Arab nations to help Bosnia's Muslims in their 1992-95 war against the Serbs and Croats.

March raids of another Islamic charity, Benevolence International Foundation, turned up evidence which the U.S. government has said helps link that group to Osama bin Laden (news - web sites).
