13 Years Ago Today: Massacre at Tiananmen Square
SV

Posted on 06/04/2002 12:23:22 PM PDT by Straight Vermonter

It seems like moments ago but it has actually been 13 years since the butchers of Beijing ended the dream of freedom for the Chinese people. While we should all be vigilant when dealing with the current government in China let us not forget the thousands of freedom loving Chinese who died while rallying around their own Lady Liberty.

And today, I walked past the ever-present Falon Gong protestors on 42nd Street near the Hudson which demonstates that China still has a long way to go from their big step backwards.

Powder..Patch..Ball FIRE!

Sad Liberty bump
When it was happening I really thought the students might pull it off.
I saw the heroism of a pedestrian against a tank.
Lady Liberty standing in the square.

And then the slaughter.

Those Chinese protestors will not have died in vain. One day, one day, the people of China will be free, and their butchers will be in hell where they belong.

My son was born on June 2, 1989 and I remember bringing him home on the morning of the 4th and watching this play out on TV. As I held him I thought that we had come within a hair's breadth of living in a much freer world. Just imagine how different the world would be today if these students had pulled it off. Imagine if Bush the elder had hinted that the US could not tolerate a massacre...

OK, OK, OK. I've seen that picture a thousand times--but no one ever says if the tank ran over the guy or not.

So, what happened to the guy?

I know many people from the Mainland China. I have been told that only about 10% of the population is communist. However, that is still 120 million communist which is more than enough to stay in power.

The Chinese government defends the Tianamen Massacre. They consider the mistakes to be allowing the students to gather in the first place and letting the international media broadcast. They point to Russia's economic meltdown as reason enough for their "wisdom" of keeping the communist system.

Nevertheless, China is not the same as it was 13 years ago. Yes, the government is as brutal as ever. However, people inside the SEZ (Special Economic Zones) have more freedom and wealth than those outside it. The genie is out of the bottle. China will never be able to go back to the same communist system they had 13 years ago.

May the world never forget the atrocities of tyrants who kill their own people to maintain a hold on power.

Thanks for helping us remember the brave Tiananmen students who gave their lives in an effort to bring democracy to their country.

In Cantonese, the words "June 4" luhk sei are similar in sound to the words "Mainland (China) died." A part of China died on that day. A very sad day indeed.

I'll never forget the picture of high officials from Bush Senior's White House drinking toasts to these very same killers hours after the massacre started. That put an end to any support for any Bush in this family.

He was pulled out of the way by another student.

Are you sure? I thought it was unknown what happened to him (and I didn't even think that his identity was known).

Remembering Tiananmen Square,
Remembering the ongoing persecution of the Catholic Church.
Remembering the ongoing persecution of Protestants and Falun Gong.

Praying for the ChiCom government to collapse like the Berlin Wall.
