Want reputable seller of Potassium Iodide and possibly Potassium Iodate.
Posted on 06/11/2002 7:43:11 AM PDT by old-ager
A google.com search for "potassium iodide" provides numerous links. What I am looking for are comments from people who have personally purchased potassium iodide or potassium iodate from a website. Also, any knowledgeable comments about iodate versus iodide. Thanks in advance.

KI4U.com worked great for me. Better than going to the local pharmacy and getting my one government-sponsored "free pill". Remember though, KI does not prevent all radioactivity damage to a person.

Iodate ostensibly provides longer shelf life and doesn't taste as bad (if kids involved). However, it comes in a jar as opposed to sealed, individual administrations, as the link for nukepills.com does. Once a pill jar is open, deterioration begins immediately. Frankly, one does not need all those pills, unless of course you have a large family. If you are in a field environ, post-event, I would prefer the sealed strips. What if you drop the lid for the pill jar? Again, your individual situation dictates.

I read the other day, the state of NJ had stockpiled K1 for distribution in the event of "trouble." Can you just see the traffic jams that will result? It's gridlock on a non-nuclear day!

Be careful with potassium iodate! It is a powerful oxidant and can not be used the same way as potassium iodide unless they have some way of buffering it. I can't imagine why they would sell the iod
ate for this purpose because in the wrong hands, it can have disatrous results.
Here are some warnings on KIO3 alias potassium iodate:

May cause irritation, redness and pain. Chronic Exposure:

www.ki4u.com - excellent site
Despite disclaimer that they were backordered, I received my order in 3 days.
I keep it in my emergency pack almost 24/7, along with benedryl and doxycycline (antibiotic).

I also thought it was very nice of them to provide plans to make your own if it is in short supply, unavailable, you are short on funds and need to supply a large community of people:

If you are comfortable with Ebay, there are many reputable sellers of KI and other NBC info.

Yes, that's a great web page. I have a bottle of "Polar Pure" which is crystalline iodide used for water disinfection for camping and things like that. It will perform as a thyroid protectant as well. Great to know I don't have anything else to buy.
I did buy a low level radiation detector a couple weeks ago, they are still pretty cheap, at least they were before yesterday, and I'm glad I did. If they pop off some sort of home-brew device there will be chaos, obviously, so having a source of iodine and a means of checking for contamination would be very useful.
These terrorists must have forgotten something. We invented nuclear weapons, and they might want to reflect upon that a bit. Oops!

Can you just see the traffic jams that will result? It's gridlock on a non-nuclear day! Yes, evacuation plans of any type are pathetic for the tri-state area - let me correct that; impossible. Any given family is dispersed over about 100 square miles on any given work day if they regularly commute to the city or nearby. All one can do is be vigilant and pray for America.

I keep it in my emergency pack almost 24/7, along with benedryl and doxycycline (antibiotic). It is amazing what one can find at feed stores and vet supply houses in the way of perfectly safe, no-prescription-needed antibiotics and medications.
