Common Cause: Democrats Undermining New Campaign Finance Law

Capitol Hill (CNSNews.com) - The lobbying organization behind the "Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act" Friday accused the Democratic National Committee of hypocrisy for trying to undermine the new law restricting the financing of political campaigns.

At a news conference on the steps of the Democratic National Committee (DNC) headquarters, Common Cause President Scott Harshbarger issued a challenge to DNC Chairman Terry McAuliffe.

"We're calling on the DNC and Mr. McAuliffe specifically today to make a choice," Harshbarger said. "Mr. McAuliffe has said he supports [the Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act (BCRA)], has said it repeatedly, publicly, politically. The Democratic Party has supported this," he continued. "But since the law passed in March, lawyers for the Democratic campaign committees have been working aggressively to undermine this law."

Harshbarger said his accusation is based both on what representatives of Common Cause have heard DNC lawyers say during Federal Election Commission (FEC) hearings and in court cases.

A prepared statement distributed by DNC staff members following the news conference reiterated the party's support for BCRA.

"The Democratic National Committee (DNC) fully supports a ban on the use of soft money by national political parties and has been a champion of this goal for decades," the document stated.

The BCRA, which will ban soft money contributions to the national political parties, is not scheduled to go into effect until after the 2002 elections. But the law is already being challenged in federal court on grounds that it violates the U.S. Constitution.

Democrats Undermining New Campaign Finance Law

I am shocked! Shocked and appalled. This is just totally unexpected. How could the ever do this? I am simply aghast at this. Why I've almost got the vapors. Maybe I should go lie down for a while.

It was to be expected. They're Demoncraps.
Lie, cheat, steal and probably kill if necessary for power.
Welcome to the corrupt world of the DNC.

I'm shocked, shocked, I tell you, that Democrats would say one thing and do another.

Here in California, voters passed a campaign finance initiative that supposedly would limit donations. Problem is, the initiative was designed by Democrat John Burton with a provision that allows pre-existing committees to receive unlimited funds. Consequently Burton has collected over $500,000 above the limits. Democrat Assembly Speaker Herb Wesson has collect over 1.6 million more than the limits allow. These dirtbags gas on about the need for campaign finance reform, but what they mean is for other people.

As with ALL of their politically correct laws. It's outright oppression.

If Harshbarger really believes this (as opposed to being a publicity stunt to "prove" Communist Cause is non-partisan) he is the biggest moron on the planet. Did he really, truly think the Dems would support anything that actually hurt them? Is he that freaking nuts, or has he just never met any Demonrats?

Sorry, but I think Communist Cause is just doing this for appearances. I'm sure Harshbarger is laughing on the phone to Daschole et al, saying "Did you see our press conference? The media really thinks we're not in your pocket! What morons!"

Yes, the thought that "Communist Cause" (good one) could actually come out and criticize the Democratic Socialist Party is a real shocker. That the Democrats would violate their own law is of course Standard Operating Procedure.

Remember that hearing involving Unions and the Demos? That's an equally interesting development.

Scott Harshbarger is a truly evil man.

He condemned the Amirault family to Hell for his own personal aggrandizement.

He must miss having his photograph on the front page; hence his attack on the DNC.

Not that that's a bad thing.

The dems just got through paying $70,000 in fines. Lack of decent leadership induces additional stupidity.

Common cause has its head ensconsed deeply where the sun does not shine.

That is noticable by the fecal stains around their necks

This is another example of what John LeBoutillier wrote in his last column A LYING CULTURE.

For what? Raising millions of dollars illegally? Seems worth the fine.

Huh? What? You mean Common Cause didn't want a CFR law that strengthens incumbents, increases the influence of the least accountable special interests, obscures the sources of political donations, and tramples on the Bill of Rights?

Did they never actually read the law, or are they really that stupid?!

But, But, But, Senator McCain thought, if his Campaign Finance Reform, passed, all those nasty folks who were violating the old laws would repent, and abide by his new laws.
