Great! Except now, I get to run through the gauntlet of damn pop up ads on the L.A. Times site before getting to their articles.
Crap...

If at first you don't succeed, try again.
This is an answer I can indeed, completely accept. Thanks.

It was a wonderful resolution Joe. The best to be hoped for. The fines weren't punitive.
I think 500 non institutionalized Freepers, if we have that many, should each go down to their bank tomorrow and get 10 Sacagawea Dollar Coins (pay for them with 10 Susan B. Anthony Dollar Coins), put them in two manilla envelopes, mail them to the Times and the Post (c/o "Legally Owed Payments So Says That Lady Judge Division: Cashier Cage Department) with a note ... "Payment on FR Account."
Don't forget to put "Please respond confirming receipt of payment during my regular Saturday or Sunday office hours
Mitigating Issue: There may not be 5000 Sacagawea Coins left in out-of-fountain circulation. 20 fifty cent checks or 20,000 quarters with either Delaware or Rhode Island commemeration will be acceptable substitutes.
To: Jim Robinson
That must have cost them TONS in attorney fees.

To answer you I'd have to agree that it was a defeat. Which I do not.
I see no way Freedom was jeopardized.
This is no bigger blow to liberty than a pimple on an elephants rear.

Great news! WTG!!!
To: dennisw
The owners of the LAT and WP have failed in their quest to control the free flow of information to the American people.
With every passing day they become increasingly irrlevant.
One day soon they might not even exist.
To: Jim Robinson
Thanks, Jim. You're a Very Valuable Person to a lot of us!

What JR doesn't mention is that the consent degree will now be used by the Associated Press, Reuters, NY Times, Dow Jones, et al to force FR to edit/remove their full length articles as well in order to conform with fair use provisions. I, too, am afraid that they will soon be knocking at his door. I'm going to enjoy FR (and continue to contribute both articles and dollars) until the number of excerpted articles exceeds the number of full length ones. Unfortunately, this decision may make that come sooner than later.

There is some largish number of days in which to bring the site into compliance. I'm not sweating it.
To: Jim Robinson
Great news!! I think they stared you in the eyes and THEY blinked. Viva la Free Republica!
To: Jim Robinson
Good news! There's plenty to do without that hanging over your/our heads.

B/S. I've stretched the interpretation of fair use to its outer limits. In my opinion, fair use is a very sloppy concept to begin with and the entire copyright fiasco needs a complete overhaul. However, this case has absolutely no affect on those who continue to claim fair use under the commonly accepted interpretation. I can't see how this settlement would affect anyone who wants to issue a new challenge. Just be careful not to bugger up the case with any side issues. Open your website. Post full text copies of all the LAT/WP articles you can find, dissect them, criticize them, invite others to discuss them, but be careful to not ask for donations or do anything that a judge can use against you. Just make sure it's pure free speech and political discussion. You will probably win. You will risk your entire fortune and the rest of your life, but you will probably win - if the Supreme Court decides to hear your case.

OUTSTANDING, bro!
JimRob, me personally, I would wither up and DIE if I lost Free Republic... I don't know what it says about me but some of my best buds are right here on FR...
To all my FRiends:
FRiend,
When you are sad,.........I will get you drunk and help you plot revenge against the sorry b@st@rd who made you sad.
When you are blue, ...I'll try to dislodge whatever is choking you.
When you smile, ...I'll know you finally got laid.
When you are scared, ...I will rag you about it every chance I get.
When you are worried, ...I will tell you horrible stories about how much worse it could be and to quit whining.
When you are confused, ...I will use little words to explain it to your dumb a$$.
When you are sick, ...stay away from me until you're well again. I don't want whatever you have.
When you fall, ...I will point and laugh at your clumsy a$$.
This is my oath, ...I pledge 'till the end.
Why you may ask?
Because you're my FRiend!
