Elizabeth Smart Case--Salt Lake TV Station Reports a Search Dog Has Made a Hit on South Mountain

Channel Four just reported that a search dog has "hit" on something high up on South Mountain at the south end of the Salt Lake valley. The report said a second dog was on the way to the area to see if it would also hit on the same source. Other search units are on the way to the area.

Channel Four just broke into Nightline to give more information. Dozens of volunteers with serch lights are heading to the area. The dogs are described as volunteer dogs along with police dogs. The area is not far from Draper where Bret Edmunds was said to be sleeping in his car. The reporter said several unmarked cars had gone in. The station promises to continue coverage. I will keep you posted.

I don't think Edmunds is in any condition to be interviewed tonight. The SLC Police Chief said this afternoon that detectives where in route to the hospital from SLC and would try to talk to Edmunds tomorrow.

Edmunds under heavy guard at City Hospital

MARTINSBURG, WV JUNE 21 - Bret Michael Edmunds is in the Intensive Care Unit at City Hospital under heavy guard by Federal Marshals and the FBI.

Hospital officials called law enforcement Friday afternoon, and within an hour, the man wanted for what he might know in the Elizabeth Smart case, was placed under arrest.

It all started at 5:15 a.m. Thursday morning, when a 26 year-old man came into the Hospital Emergency Room. Doctors checked him into the hospital under a false name.

"He was admitted at 10:30 a.m. in our ICU and has remained a patient there since that time," stated Terry McCabe, spokesperson, Martinsburg City Hospital.

Around two p.m. Friday afternoon, the nurses on the Critical Care floor alerted Hospital officials.

"The staff became suspicious again, I don't any of the details, the FBI can fill you in more on that, contacted the local FBI here in Martinsburg and arrived on the scene within thirty minutes," said McCabe.

Federal Marshals arrived first on scene, but their role soon took a backseat when the FBI positively identified the man as Bret Michael Edmunds at 3 p.m. His car was moved from the parking lot for police to take a closer look at Edmunds' reported home the past few week. As for Edmunds, he is the sole patient in the ICU as the three other patients were moved, leaving him under 24-hour guard.

"Because of patient confidentiality, we're not allowed to divulge any information regarding his diagnosis or treatment. The only information we can release is that he's in serious condition," stated McCabe.

A condition Hospital officials say will factor into when and how Edmunds will be moved. According to McCabe, "We have patient care and care for the patient of utmost importance and it is our top priority. At the same time, we realize that this is a serious issue and we're cooperating totally with the FBI."

The Hospital is pretty tight-lipped about details regarding this case. The FBI in Salt Lake City has directed the flow of information to the media go through them. But that hasn't stopped a media circus from converging on Martinsburg.

Channel Four's ten o'clock news aired a short interview with a Draper resident who said they had observed a man sleeping in a dark green Saturn across the street from their new house for a number of nights. The plates were said to be those of Edmunds. There was a big volunteer search effort earlier in the day in the Draper area. More current details from Sheriff's office: The dogs indicated on three different places on some mounds of dirt in a construction area. The Sheriff's office doesn't know the credentials of the dogs. Will bring their own dogs in the morning with light so as not to destroy potential evidence because they know there is not a live person to bring out. This is about a mile from where Edmunds was said to have been sleeping in his care.
