There seems to be more involved in this, more people than just these two, thus far..Also, note how Mrs Smart was speaking to her dgt during her statements.

I was replying to the comment the Smarts made, (that 2 or 3 months is not as short as they would like to claim) 2 or 3 months gives this guy plenty of time to figure out their daily routine, get used to the children and the children's personalities.

Further: If Smart's business was to buy, fix up, and sell houses, it's likely that he used the same set of guys more than once. I'd bet that some of them may have been doing jobs for Smart over a span of years.

In that case, Ricci being there for only a couple of months would be considered "short."

But if Ricci knew the home and kids so well, surely he would have known that Elizabeth and Mary Katherine shared a bedroom. Who would kidnap a girl out of a room they knew she shared with another sibling? It's awfully likely that the sibling would wake up and scream out for her parents, leaving the kidnapper stuck red-handed in a bedroom only a few feet from the parents' room.

UNcle Tom took a lot of hear because of his bizarre statements

His statements are not at all bizarre if he was told by the police that in the event that a kidnapper was keeping Elizabeth alive, they should maintain a friendly tone and use the media to reach him and not harm Elizabeth. During the polygraph tests, who of us does not have things that we would not particularly wish to discuss with law enforcement?

SALT LAKE CITY: Elizabeth's Father.

Published: Jun 24, 2002

"Mr. Ricci has risen to the top of our list to be looking at," Dinse said.

Police have not shown Ricci's photograph to the sole witness of the abduction, Elizabeth's 9-year-old sister. Mary Katherine Smart told police the man who took her sister was between 30 to 40 years old, nicely dressed and soft spoken.

In addition, Salt Lake City police and FBI agents have interviewed Bret Michael Edmunds, whom they had sought for two weeks for questioning in the abduction investigation.

He is at hospital in Martinsburg, W.Va., where Monday morning he was listed in serious but stable condition, said hospital spokeswoman Christy Polack. Edmunds checked himself into the hospital on Thursday for treatment of drug-related liver damage.

Authorities said Edmunds, 26, was cooperative with investigators and allowed a search of his vehicle.

"We are very confident that he has provided us with some good information," said FBI special agent Dan Roberts. Police will be following up on those potential leads. "He is just one of many people of interest to us in this case."

A milkman helped police trace a car owned by Edmunds that was spotted in the family's neighborhood two mornings before her June 5 abduction.

The car was seen in a suburban Salt Lake subdivision in the days following the girl's disappearance, but search teams recovered nothing Saturday after dogs had picked up a possible scent in the same area one day earlier.

Berkeley County, W.Va., Magistrate Sandra Miller issued a warrant Monday morning charging Edmunds with being a fugitive from justice after federal authorities said they would ask a judge to withdraw a federal warrant for unlawful flight, Martinsburg Police Chief Ted Anderson said.

Edmunds will be arraigned on the state charge in Berkeley County Magistrate Court after he is released from the hospital, Anderson said. It is not known when that may be.

Melodie Rydalch, spokeswoman for the U.S. Attorney in Utah, said dropping the federal evading charge is standard procedure after the person has been located.

I'm with you, Bella. I said last night, some things just aren't adding up. One of the theories (stories?) I saw last night was that someone said this was part of a "wider plot".

Now, questions...

If there were more than one or two people involved here, that shoots down the "burglary gone wrong" theory, IMO. The Smarts are obviously well-to-do, but if their last name isn't Rockefeller or Vanderbilt, why target Elizabeth specifically? Surely there are wealthier families in the area. Unless...1) those involved were -sure- they could get money from the Smarts, for reasons entirely unrelated to Elizabeth. Which goes back to blackmail of Mr. Smart (not likely, IMO, but not ruled out, either), or 2) those involved picked Elizabeth because they thought she would be an easier target, based on the fact that maybe they already had a way into the home, and were already known to the children.

SALT LAKE CITY: Dinse Said.

Published: Jun 24, 2002

Ricci, 48, had been living in the Salt Lake City suburb of Kearns. He has a long criminal history in Utah, beginning with a burglary conviction in 1973. He was been in and out of prison for the past three decades, and was most recently freed on parole in 2000.

Ricci's convictions also include aggravated robbery, attempted homicide and a prison escape.

Chris Thomas, who has been acting as a spokesman for the girl's family, said Ricci last worked in the Smart's Federal Heights home more than a year ago, painting and doing handy work.

Dinse said he believed Ricci - pronounced REES ee - had contact with the Smart children while he was working on the house.

Monday, Elizabeth's parents made no mention of Ricci and instead urged for people nationwide to search for their daughter. His house and car have been searched. Ricci has voluntarily talked to police. Investigators have also spoken with Ricci's wife, Dinse said.

"This person who has abducted Elizabeth could be far away," said Ed Smart, Elizabeth's father.

I've not heard whether or not the family was asleep in the home at the time of the burglary, or if they were away. Whatever the case, it seems that after having been hit once, they'd be more careful to have that alarm system armed at night.

Good questions, I don't know. Of course, criminals aren't known for being the brightest people around. I'm starting to think that there was one more person involved in the abduction OR it was a burglary attempt gone bad.

Who would kidnap a girl out of a room they knew she shared with another sibling?

Here's where Klaass has a point. IIRC, Polly Klaass was grabbed out of a roomful of sleeping girls.

And if this is a sex crime, it's entirely possible that Ricci (or whoever) was so fixated on getting Elizabeth that this seemed to be the only way.

And finally, I think it's probably a mistake to impute normal reasoning powers to people who do these sorts of things. I mean, what normal person would steal a girl from her bedroom in the first place? And if one is so-inclined, the fact that she might not be alone wouldn't matter much. (And I have to think that if MK hadn't pretended to be asleep, she'd be dead right now.)

Lois Smart speaks to Elizabeth at almost every press conference. She just wants her daughter to know she is loved and missed.

Question: If your house had been burglarized in the past year, wouldn't you make sure that your garage doors were down and that your alarm was on before turning in for the night? Would having going through a burglary that you would be even more security conscience. Am I missing something?

"Monday, Elizabeth's parents made no mention of Ricci and instead urged for people nationwide to search for their daughter........ "This person who has abducted Elizabeth could be far away," said Ed Smart, Elizabeth's father."

This is VERY odd. I remember Ed Smart also saying something to the effect that he was "disappointed"(?) that Edmunds had not panned out. Why did Ed Smart act as if Ricci didn't even exist when he made his statements? According to the police, Ricci may provide "a very big piece to this puzzle," and the father acts as if he doesn't even exist????

Ricci may not be the brightest person around, but he sure knows how to keep getting out of prison. Given the details of his history in post #107, I'm wondering what the heck a person has to do in Utah to get put away for a long, long time. Apparently a three DECADE career of criminal activity, including aggravated robbery, attempted homicide and a prison escape, doesn't do the trick. It begins to appear that the Utah judicial system folks aren't the brightest people around either.

Authorities Questioning Convict Who Used to Work in Home of Missing Utah Girl

Published: Jun 24, 2002

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Police investigating the apparent kidnapping of 14-year-old Elizabeth Smart said Monday they have not ruled out a handyman with a 29-year criminal record.

As a result of focusing the investigation on those who had access to the Smarts' home, they talked again to the man and are checking out his alibi, said Salt Lake City Police Chief Rick Dinse.

"At this point in time, he is not a charged suspect, but he is very interesting," he said.

Police have been questioning Richard Albert Ricci, a man who worked in the Smart home more than a year ago.

He was arrested on an unrelated parole violation June 14, police spokesman Fred Louis said. That was nine days after Elizabeth Smart was reportedly taken at gunpoint from her bedroom in an affluent Salt Lake City neighborhood.

Despite having had Ricci in custody for 11 days, police haven't been able to pin down the man's whereabouts on the morning of the abduction, Dinse said. Ricci has not been charged in the kidnapping.

"We have questions about his actions between May 31 and June 8," Dinse said.

"Mr. Ricci denies involvement," Dinse said.

"We are very confident that he has provided us with some good information," said FBI special agent Dan Roberts. Police will be following up on those potential leads. "He is just one of many people of interest to us in this case."

There was no known relationship between Ricci and Edmunds, authorities said.

When you have six kids the burglar alarm is not your friend..........it is usually used when a family will be away from the home for an extended period of time....such as vacation or long weekend.

I believe one of the reports was that the girls only recently began sharing a bedroom, and that it was Elizabeth who joined MK in the upstairs room. Perhaps Ricci intended to take MK and was surprised to find Elizabeth. ELizabeth must have kept a very cool head not to have let him know someone else was there. As for Mrs. Smart speaking to her daughter, this is entirely consistent with believing that someone who knew Elizabeth took her for ransom. The Smarts were on the receiving end of some very good advice to try to establish rapport with the kidnapper by making statements to the effect that they knew he "cared" for Elizabeth and they he probably had problems as we all do (the purported "strange" comments of Uncle Tom).

Interestingly this is exactly the opposite of the rubbish spouted by Mark Klass in his 'expert capacity' for Fox News. He has suffered a loss no one should have to endure, however, using him as an "expert" on child abduction is rather like using the captain of the Exxon Valdes as an expert on shipping safety.
