USO Canteen FReeper Style...Salutes One of Our Own....June 25,2002
FRiends of the USO Canteen FReeper Style and Snow Bunny

Posted on 06/25/2002 2:31:57 AM PDT by Snow Bunny

Today at the USO Canteen FReeper Style is a very special day. We have all heard that once a Marine always a Marine and that is more true than naught.

There is no finer example of a Marine and a FReeper than LadyX . Her travels in life and into the lives of others has been numerous. Today join us in celebrating LadyX and her 50 years as a Marine.

Many of you have written to me of your appreciation for knowing LadyX and how today marks 50 years since she became a Marine. This is surprise to LadyX and OUR thank to you LadyX, for serving our country and for being a wonderful FReeper and friend.

Her service was during the Korean Conflict in the United States Marine Corps, instructing Women Marine recruits in classroom subjects, and later as a military wife.

With the Marine Corps at its greatest buildup then, for Korean combat, Women Marines freed men for their primary role - to protect our Republic and its ideals.

This is one of my favorite posts that LadyX made.
I saved it and cherish her words.

Bunny, since you did this as a surprise, may I point out the picture you said was my son Steve (MedProf) is actually another of my grandsons - Kyle.

He is nearly 17, and in April I took him to see where Grandmama was right after turning 18.
I stepped back in time that day, setting a pace that left him quite literally dragging in the dust!!

With my computer meltdown in early May, losing recent pictures of Steve, my older son, I will try to contact him for some to post later today.

For clarification, in the picture when I taught school at Myrtle Beach AFB when I was 33, I am the fourth from the left.

I, too, graduated from high school in 1952, larry, turning 18 that May.
We probably were at Parris Island at the same time, if your brother trained there!
There were 35,000 Souls on Board that summer, as Bunny accurately pointed out, the largest buildup in Corps History.

After Recruit Training, I was told I was assigned to Supply at PI - but my orders were changed to "Report to S-3."
A bit dejected, having applied for Air Traffic Control and Surveying & Mapping, and then told "Oops! Didn't the recruiter tell you those fields are not open to women??!! (haha), I bucked up and did that.

The sergeant in charge of the Instruction Office introduced me to the Drill Instructors I'd not had in my own training, pointed to a desk and said, "By the way, Pfc Daugherty, tomorrow you give your first lecture in Marine Corps Administration!"
Typical military story!

Specialist Ivan Resto embraces his mother Ermelinda Resto during the sendoff for his military police unit in Reading, Mass., Monday, June 24, 2002. The 972nd Military Police Company, which is comprised of Massachusetts and New Hampshire reserves, is expected to be deployed to Afghanistan for about a year. The unit was also activated shortly after the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks to patrol airports in Massachusetts. (AP Photo/Charles Krupa)

Is something going goofy with the server here? I got logged in as "anochka" a few minutes ago. Prior to that, I couldn't get into the Canteen at all.

Thank you, Amy.
Remember LAST June when we were boosting The Petition to defund the ESA COB1 was pushing?
When Cobby was at a well site without computer capability for two weeks and some thought he'd deserted his own thread?
The rumor he'd changed his screen name and was posting under the new one, leaving us and editor-surveyor and others high and dry?!!! - LOL

9/11 altered the landscape of America, though, and we focused on different things.
It does seem, however, things are swinging back in OUR direction, the environmental wacky ones responsible for the current intensity of the fires out West, logical thinning and cleaning up stopped by them.

You are so faithful doing the Fresno Freeps - wish I could be there, too.
