AB 1058 Anti-SUV bill clone passes in CA

John Campbell (R) just announced on the Hugh Hewitt show that the democrats in Sacramento have pulled a fast one. Bill 1058 which has been written about on several posts originally failed. The democrats took a bill on Friday night which dealt with an unrelated subject and gutted out the language. They then inserted the exact language of 1058 and the senate passed it Friday. This (Monday) afternoon the house got the bill. The democrats had to hold a hearing and every office in the capital was available but they chose to hold the "hearings" in the smallest office in the building - the only one which had no TV cameras, no radio, no cameras, and no space for reporters or the public to attend. They then passed a vote making this bill exempt from the 3-day waiting period required by law for public input. The democrats just passed the bill in the last 45 minutes and it now goes to the governor's desk. No republicans voted for the bill in either chamber. One highlight - (Dennis?) Cardoza - the democrat running for Condit's seat voted for the bill in the central valley. He's toast.

Someone please make links to the related articles on this bill which raises the costs of SUVs several thousand dollars, raises the cost of gasoline, and will in fact make it impossible to purchase some SUVs outright. This also need some major pinging.

One idea behind this plan was that all of the ads in California said to call Sacramento to opposed 1058. Now the democrats can claim that they DID oppose 1058. (wink, wink)
The Sierra Club made this a litmus test for dems. They were told that they would be on the Sierra club hit list if they opposed this clone. One democrat house member said that he decided to vote for this bill after SIX calls to the speakers office

Rush, Cagey - SUV haters in CA.....coming to a State near you? Cob - when are they coming for your truck?

It passed in the house by one vote. Grey Davis make have orchestrated this as a money-making opportunity. Now he has 12 days to say to the car makers and/or the enviros "Give me major money or I will sign/veto this bill."

SUV's further make that division line between the "haves" and "have nots"(in a Dem's view). SUV's are totally selfish and evil in the liberal dem's eyes...however, most(of the Democrats) that are in power drive them, or have someone else drive them to their offices in CA to sneak this into the bill.
If in the market, there was a demand for a smaller car, then there would be more....simply stated.
But that would be unfair...I am so sick of hearing unfair I could puke......
To: ZGuy
So what was in the bill? What was the number on the bill? The GOP can beat the Dimwits over the head on tv ads with this one.

In a free republic, what else are things that don't need to be here?
If someone can afford a SUV, Caddy, or whatever...what difference does that make to those without them? I have yet to see any logical arguement against an individual's right to own and drive whatever they desire.
If something is legal to own and use, that is all there is needed to justify it.

What ever happened to the great state of California? So much innovation and customizing in the auto industry got it's very life in California. It started out west and found it's way across the rest of the US eventually and now these "idiots in charge" want everyone walking. It is sickening.

Sorry Kelly - I don't remember the number of this bill, though rep. Campbell stated in on the show. See all the threads on AB 1058 to see what this bill was about. All they did was gut one bill with a different number and then did a straight copy and paste of AB 1058. It is identical.

BTW, I'm doing just fine with my wife and three children in our Urban Assault Vehicle. I'm sure you/they don't expect me to cram my large frame (6'4"/285#) and the remainder of my family into an econobox, do you?

The fake bill that passed was your creepy ASSemblynazi, Keeley's bill! I know it's an embarrassment to you, but you've got to do something about him and Byron Sher down there in Santa Bizzare County! Geez!!!
Anyone for a "Drive on the Crapitol" in a traffic jamming demonstration of abject irritation? Demonicrap SUV envy certainly gives the lie to their being for "CHOICE!"
To: ZGuy
Well if you find out let me know please. I'll email Campbell and get him to give us the number. You think it is the same number?

Any idea how much this will jack up the price of an SUV?
If significant, this might really hurt them come November. Been a long time since I lived there, but I seem to remember that the annual tag renewal was also quite high.

To: ZGuy
What is kind of funny is, liberals hate it because the wealthy own SUVs, yet, they claim that the wealthy are the 1% of the country who should be taxed to the hilt. So, if 1% of the country is driving SUVs, what is the problem. Apparently, they can afford it. How is an SUV any worse than a yacht or private jet/helicopter?
To: upchuck
Will it be okay when the libs reduce all of us to driving this?
To: Paul Atreides
This bill could punish more than the "wealthy." In addition to the $3,500 tax on SUVs, other possible scenarios include a 50-cents-per-gallon gas tax and a 2-cents-per-mile-driven tax (not sure how this would be enforced).

Wrong.
Their ultimate goal is to shove us into their absurd public transport projects, with brute force if necessary.
By the way, is that car a Smart, made by a joint venture (if my memory serves) of Mercedes and the Swatch watch people?
If so, Car magazine (UK) tested it and if my memory serves, you'll love it if you want to get into really tight parking spaces, hate it otherwise.
I don't like SUVs myself because they're ugly. But my Mercedes 420SEL sedan is hardly a fuel conservation paragon :-).

But, then, SUVs are on my list of "Things that don't need to be."Who decides?
You don't need a computer. You are wasting the blood of precious Gaia by using a computer, even if you are off the grid. Sturdy shoes, coarse clothing, backbreaking labor. Those are the things you need. It is decided.
Socialism fails badly. Always has, always will. Failure to recognize that is delusion.
