Patrick Henry: We need you! Jerry Falwell urges Americans to pray for new, Godly leaders

During this week when America observed her 226th birthday, our nation is at a crucial crossroads. We are at war with bloodthirsty terrorists. We are hearing the voices of ungodly jurists who tell us that the term "under God" is no longer appropriate for this nation that was founded in reverence for and adoration of Almighty God. Abortion is the law of the land. Pornography fills the airwaves. God, for many, is an afterthought, if thought of at all. And few of our leaders seem willing to engage the culture from a Judeo-Christian platform

Yes, we are a nation at a crossroads.

That is why I am praying that a man – or men – like Patrick Henry will arrive on the scene to intrepidly call America back to God and to the patriotic spirit of our Forefathers.

Patrick Henry (1736-99) was my beloved Virginia's first governor after the commonwealth declared independence from Great Britain. He was, in fact, "the Voice of the Revolution." He was a man of unquestioned character and leadership, and a man who could mesmerize audiences with his oration.

Thomas Jefferson said of him: "He appeared to me to speak as Homer wrote."

Following the passage of the unjust Stamp Act in 1765, Patrick Henry – only nine days into his service in the Virginia House of Burgesses – boldly pressed a succession of resolutions defining the rights of the colony and pronouncing the Stamp Act subversive of liberty. To that point, no man had had the audacity to lead such an insurrection against powerful Britain. However, four of Henry's resolutions passed, while all seven were widely discussed throughout the colonies.

At the Second Virginia Convention (1775), Henry lead the effort for Virginia to form a standing army, concluding the call to arms with his moving words: "Is life so dear, or peace so sweet, as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery? Forbid it, Almighty God! I know not what course others may take, but as for me, give me liberty or give me death!"

In that glorious speech, he noted "the holy cause of liberty."

That cause remains holy today!

Patrick Henry was God's prophet. Whenever God has a great task to be performed, He raises up a man of equal greatness for that task. When this nation was being founded, there were strong voices calling for America to remain as colonies joined to Great Britain. But there were voices on the other side calling for independence. These voices called for revolution, and the leading voice was that of Patrick Henry.

Ezekiel 22:30 tells us: "And I sought for a man among them, that should make up the hedge, and stand in the gap before me for the land, that I should not destroy it: but I found none."

Henry was God's man to stand in the gap, rallying this nation to become a separate republic. He understood the need for God to remain the focal point. The modern concept that "religion and politics don't mix" was completely foreign to Patrick Henry and our Founders.

Henry said, "It cannot be emphasized too strongly or too often that this great nation was founded, not by religionists, but by Christians; not on religions, but on the Gospel of Jesus Christ. For this very reason peoples of other faith have been afforded asylum, prosperity and freedom of worship here."

In his speeches against tyranny, Henry said he believed God governed the affairs of men and would intervene on behalf of the colonies. He advocated a federal government with internal checks and balances with a written Bill of Rights that would protect the freedom of each man before God.

Henry believed in absolute morality. He taught "the eternal difference between right and wrong does not fluctuate." (Needless to say, Bill Clinton is the antithesis of Patrick Henry.)

Patrick Henry believed in the authority of the Bible. He held that "eternal law was reflected in nature and written in the Bible" as the surest foundation of social and political life. He also believed, as does President Bush, that authority comes from God.

We do not have Patrick Henrys leading us today because Christians have been careless. Even though we say "God Bless America" with our lips, we often reject God by our actions. We have elected men and women who have ousted prayer from our schools. We have elected men and women who adhere to the "right" to abort unborn babies. We have elected men and women who uphold homosexual lifestyles that God calls abomination.

We must become prudent with our votes, supporting only candidates who – like Patrick Henry – adhere to biblical values. It's time to get serious. We must pray that God will again send us leaders like Patrick Henry who will fearlessly hold God's hand while leading this nation. And we must be willing to wholeheartedly support them.

We do not have Patrick Henrys leading us today because Christians have been careless. Even though we say "God Bless America" with our lips, we often reject God by our actions.

More of Falwell's sanctimonious slop, in the same vein as 9/11 being caused not by the bad guys, but because God lifted His "protective veil".

Falwell would have seen Henry having beer at breakfast (very common in the 18th century) and agitated to have him hanged.

I once saw a public forum in which Falwell participated. A man quoted an Old Testament verse in which God promised that his covenant with Israel would never be broken. Why then, the man asked, must Jews accept the "new covenant" of the New Testament? Falwell got a big laugh from the yokels by saying, "Sir, you'd know better than to ask that question at Liberty Baptist!"

Have paid Falwell very little attention since.

John, I pray daily for Pres. Bush, his advisors, our military, and "all those in authority over me." Christians want to forget this: that we are REQUIRED (it isn't a request from God) to "pray for those in authority over you" that we may "live in peace." God repeatedly in the Old Testament used pagan leaders to advance the cause of Israel and to honor or protect Israel, so your leaders do NOT have to be "Christians." It helps, but God can use a donkey, if need by.

Folks, I hate to tell you, but this means praying for the Democrats as well as the Republicans. You want them to be wise, and courageous, and patriotic. To say they "can't be" says that God is a liar. He says they can be.

On the other hand, you don't want to give them free reign. So here is how I do it, and I believe this is consistent with the Word: I pray blessings on "all those in authority over me," the House, Senate, Supreme COurt, President, Gov. Taft, Mayor McLin, and my school's administration. But then, in the name of Jesus, I bind BY NAME the Democrats from interfering with certain policies. Jesus said whatever you bind on earth would be bound in heaven, so I believe this has an effect. If all Christians bound the Democrats not to impair the vote on judges, for ex., we would have our judges. You may have other methods, but this works for me. NOT PRAYING for ALL our leaders, I think, is not an option.

Patrick Henry supported the Declaration of Independence, but he was opposed to our Constitution.

They tell us, Sir, that we are weak -- unable to cope with so formidable an adversary. But when shall we be stronger? Will it be the next week, or the next year? Will it be when we are totally disarmed, and when a British guard shall be stationed in every house? Shall we gather strength by irresolution and inaction? Shall we acquire the means of effectual resistance by lying supinely on our backs, and hugging the delusive phantom of hope, until our enemies shall have bound us hand and foot? Sir, we are not weak, if we make a proper use of those means which the God of nature hath placed in our power.

Three millions of People, armed in the holy cause of liberty, and in such a country as that which we possess, are invincible by any force which our enemy can send against us. Beside, Sir, we shall not fight our battles alone. There is a just God who presides over the destinies of Nations, and who will raise up friends to fight our battles for us. The battle, Sir, is not to the strong alone. It is to the vigilant, the active, the brave. Besides, Sir, we have no election. If we were base enough to desire it, it is now too late to retire from the contest. There is no retreat but in submission and slavery! Our chains are forged! Their clanking may be heard on the plains of Boston! The war is inevitable. and let it come! I repeat, Sir, let it come!

It is in vain, Sir, to extenuate the matter. Gentlemen may cry, Peace, Peace! -- but there is no peace. The war is actually begun! The next gale that sweeps from the North will bring to our ears the clash of resounding arms! Our breathren are already in the field! Why stand we here idle? What is it that Gentlemen wish? What would they have? Is life so dear, or peace so sweet, as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery! Forbid it, Almighty God! Falwell personally is a teetotaler, but as a longtime [former] resident of Lynchburg I will tell you that this is not any tenet of the church, and if they got rid of every member that ever drank a beer they would be out of business.

As to the other question, whoever put that to Rev. Falwell deserved a more curt answer even than he got! That is a stupid and disruptive question, to which God alone knows the answer, and it is the oldest saw in the book, 2000 yrs old, to try to drive a wedge between Jews and Christians by asking the one if the other has a valid salvation or acceptance with God.

The Japanese are said to have a word called "muh" which means, "unask the question."

Exactly true.

The left busily seeks to drive wedges between Christians and Jews. Between Catholics and Baptists (all the while sucking up to every animal-, idol-, foot- and cow-worshipping freak cult imaginable.) They hate God, but what's more, the left knows and understands the basic tenet of Statism: there can be NOTHING higher than the STATE. There can be no higher allegiance or law or morality than that of the State. God must go. If He is temporarily replaced by some buddha or incense-burner or tree, that suits the left just fine.

I think most Christians and Jews know to stick together. It's Christians and Jews versus the hordes of anti-America, freedom-hating leftists. The left hates all things Judeo-Christian so much they are falling over themselves in their support for the mohams. The left hates Western Civilization, making them natural allies to the islams.

Also, I note: Surely the most demonized people on the internet (and on FR---proving that a lot of the kool-aid is consumed here, too) are Jerry Falwell and Laura Schlesinger! The left has succeeded in its brainwashing through 50 years of control of our education system, and of total media censorship and manipulation.

The Bible does state that when a country turns from God his protection is lifted. If that is the case now then Falwell is correct. If not then what the Bible says is still true, is it not? A godless country is destroyed for turning from God.

Why shoot the preacher?

Originally the word liberal meant social conservatives(no govt religion--none) who advocated growth and progress---mostly technological(knowledge being absolute/unchanging)based on law--reality... UNDER GOD---the nature of GOD/man/govt. does not change. These were the Classical liberals...founding fathers-PRINCIPLES---stable/SANE scientific reality/society---industrial progress...moral/social character-values(private/personal) GROWTH!

Thanks for the post, JH2. We do need to pray for God to bring into leadership positions, people of integrity, honesty, vision, and faith in God.

(We have such a one as our President - now we need more in other offices all over the country). God will answer if we will just pray!
