GreenPeace

I live in NYC. Over the past week I have encountered several pairs of college or high school aged kids walking around with petitions of some sort for GreenPeace. These kids seem almost robotic in their approach. Each time I tried to engage them in debate they offered a glassy smile and repeated the same Greenpeace line. I wonder what's up. Is Greenpeace starting some sort of campaign?

I developed a finely honed technique for dealing with the robotic Scientology morons that asked me the same frikkin' question every time I rounded the corner of Mass Ave and Boylston in downtown Boston during the late 70's. They would wheel around with their little clip boards to throw out the same tired line, "Can I ask you a question?", (leading to "Would you like to take a personality test?")
The fun and the challenge was to wait until the first word was juuuuust about to come out of their mouths, and say "No!", sweeping right past them as they stood dumbstruck and humiliated in front of all nearby pedestrians. After awhile, they would wheel around, recognize me - and spin around to face the other way just as fast.

Sounds like what my kids used to do.....That's why we call them "children" and try to nurture, educate and protect them.
Not a bad idea to keep them away from cults like "Greenpeas" and "DemonRats" either.

I pray every single night before I go to bed and thank god that greenpeace does not have the same political power here that they have in europe.
If you think its bad here its worse overseas.

Your story reminds me of mine:
We lived close to a shopping center when my son was about 10. He walked there to Christmas shop for the family with his money proudly stuffed into his pockets.
When he returned, he went straight to his room and closed the door. I noticed he had booklets of some sort...
I went in to find him reading Hare Krishna (sp) literature and asked what happened. "Well I didn't get to shop because there were all these people there who have brain cancer. Their heads were shaved from chemotherapy and I felt sorry for them, so I gave them all my money."

Ten or so years ago many of these non-profits regularly hired students to fundraise on a commission basis. I had a friend who was in need of greens, so he worked for them over one summer...I think the glassy eyed look might be from the fact they only can quote the sales pitch literature.
