Cheney stumps for Cornyn; foes scoff at corporate links
07/20/2002
HOUSTON - Vice President Dick Cheney said Friday that corporate leaders must do their part to fuel the country's economic recovery with honesty while the government hounds those who commit fraud.
"Leaders of the private sector also have responsibilities," Mr. Cheney said at a $1,000-per-plate fund-raiser for Republican Senate candidate John Cornyn, who faces Democrat Ron Kirk.
"Be honest and above board in all dealings and truthful in reporting profits and losses," Mr. Cheney said at a hotel across the street from bankrupt Enron Corp. "The foundation of any economy is confidence."
Neither Mr. Cheney nor Mr. Cornyn, the state attorney general, took questions. And Mr. Cheney didn't mention his tenure as chairman and chief executive of Dallas-based Halliburton Co.
The construction and oil field services company's accounting practices are under investigation by the Securities and Exchange Commission. Mr. Cheney was Halliburton's CEO from 1995 to 2000.
Democratic National Committee Chairman Terry McAuliffe on Friday said Mr. Cheney "should spend more time explaining his business practices and the accounting tricks he used as CEO of Halliburton and less time raising money for the Republican Party."
"The administration has to come clean on questions surrounding their business practices before the American people take them seriously on corporate responsibility," he said.
Previously, spokesmen for President Bush and Mr. Cheney have disputed allegations in a recent lawsuit that says Halliburton shareholders were defrauded by faulty accounting practices.
In his appearance, Mr. Cheney touted Mr. Bush's proposals to crack down on corporate malfeasance with tougher prison sentences and increased enforcement to improve investor confidence.
The vice president also lamented how more than 800 Bush nominees to federal judgeships have yet to be confirmed by the Senate.
Mr. Cheney criticized Mr. Kirk for opposing the president's nomination of Texas Supreme Court Justice Priscilla Owen to a federal appeals court.
He said Mr. Kirk had said he would support Mr. Bush if elected, "yet the first opportunity he had to forecast how he would work with the president, he came out against the president's first-rate nominee."
Mr. Kirk has said he doesn't believe Justice Owen has the even-handedness or temperament for the federal bench.
"He'll support President Bush when he thinks he's right, and he'll respectfully disagree with the president when he thinks it's not in the best interests of the people of Texas," said Kirk spokesman Justin Lonon.

Yep, and we don't see that making headlines or on any of the talking head TV channels, but I bet we would be if the Republican controlled Congress of 1994-2000 had stonewalled Clinton in like fashion.

WASHINGTON, Jul 19, 2002 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- The following is a statement from DNC Chairman McAuliffe on Vice President Cheney and Halliburton:
"Vice President Cheney should explain to the people of Houston why his company misled investors while he was CEO of Halliburton. The people of Houston know all too well the painful results of corporate accounting tricks.
"Vice President Cheney should spend more time explaining his business practices and the accounting tricks he used as CEO of Halliburton and less time raising money for the Republican Party.
"Restoring investor faith in corporations is vital to getting the economy moving in the right direction. The administration has to come clean on questions surrounding their business practices before the American people take them seriously on corporate responsibility."
