MORRISON, Tenn. July 20 — Former presidential candidate Al Gore accused the Bush administration Saturday of lying to Americans about the nation's economy.
At a campaign event for a congressional candidate, Gore told Democrats that electing Lincoln Davis could be the difference in continuing the Bush administration's economic policies.
The Bush administration has "lied about the future liabilities they have put on our shoulders as taxpayers," Gore said.
The former vice president prompted a cheer when he said: "I don't care what anybody says. I think Bill Clinton and I did a damn good job."
The recent spate of corporate corruption cases reflects the administration's policies and its appointees, who are supposed to police big business, Gore said.
He compared the administration's handling of the economy to business decisions that led to the collapse of Enron, saying Bush is creating a huge deficit.
"It's going to lead to bigger deficits than when the first Bush was there," Gore said.
He said the administration should "completely scrap its economic plan and its team on Monday ... start over from scratch and start rebuilding this economy."
Gore, who says he is undecided about another presidential race in 2004, endorsed Davis in the Aug. 1 Democratic primary for the 4th Congressional District.
Former aerospace company owner Fran Marcum is also seeking the Democratic nomination. Former Safety Commissioner Mike Greene and Tullahoma alderman Janice Bowling are seeking the Republican nomination.
Incumbent Rep. Van Hilleary, a Republican, is instead running for governor.
The rural district stretches from Alabama to Kentucky and includes counties that elected Gore to the U.S. House in 1976.

I hate to see the media pile on so gleefully- something they never even were interested in doing whenever their little tin god got in a jam... remember? About once a week! Recall the Friday Night Data Dumps? Massive amounts of stories and spin, so people would get bored fast...
But they are missing something really big here- we saw it with clinton, and apparently no one on the left has correlated it so far...
All Presidents- even clinton- have an enormous resevoir of good will from the American people. He- whoever he is- is "their guy in Washington," and the public wants and needs for him to do well, and be well thought of.
They do not like all this nattering and carping and harrassing. Not a bit! I really think it's going to backfire- just like it did with even a slug like clinton...
That said, the Republicans are not being aggressive enough in refuting this junk, the President needs to get on TV more explaining things, and we desperately need to eliminate capital gains & estate taxes, slash taxes & regulations across the board, and empower businesses to make more new jobs, and let families keep more of their own dam' money!

No, he isn't. He made up his mind a long time ago, as evidenced by creating his exploratory committee, or PAC, or whatever it was,etc., and is just waiting for enough people to beg him to run, and open the demcoffers to his campaign.
I agree with you 100%. Bush missed a golden opportunity in 2001 to lay the foundation for placing the blame on what was clearly an inevitable economic slump on Clinton, but he opted for the "bi-partisan" road. Now it's too late.
The DemocRats are SOooo much better at playing modern politics than the RepublicRats. The RepublicRats keep trying to take the high road and use logic. The DemocRats know that emotions and mudslinging wins elections.
That's a tad bit of influencing in the guise of reporting, no? In an article where Gore is speaking about what he did as VP, the paper refrained from writing, "Former Vice President Al Gore accused ... ."
Hey Al, tell us again about that great economy of yours...the one we now know was based on false profits, cooked corporate books and debt financed by your pal Sandy Weill at Citigroup....
