Portland - For 40 minutes on Friday night, former President Clinton and a ballroom of 850 adoring Democratic fans reminisced about his presidency and ridiculed that of his successor, President Bush.
And the former president also waxed philosophical about the root causes of the Sept. 11 attacks and the problems behind the current corporate scandals.
It was a $150-apiece fund raiser that drew Clinton to Oregon for the first time since his presidency ended in 2000. The event at the Portland Hilton netted at least $250,000 to be split between Bill Bradbury and U.S. Rep. Darlene Hooley, a Democrat who represents Oregon's 5th Congressional District. The Democratic Party of Oregon stood to reap a portion of the take.
Clinton roused frequent support with his partisan observations of the year and a half since he left office - a period that included the Florida ballot-counting controversy and the installatin of the George W. Bush administration, with starkly different policies from Clinton's on education, federal spending, and environmental protection.
Clinton also dwelt on two of the events that have most deeply affected Americans: the Sept 11 attacks on New York and Washington D.C. and the resulting war on terrorism, and the corporate accounting scandals that have shattered investor confidence....(snip)
Suddenly a rich man, thanks to the millions of dollars he now makes on the speaking circuit, Clinton he felt that he was part of the only class of Americans not being forced to make sacrifices. He said those in the lower, working and middle classesthe are suffering through the economic malaise and watching federal money go to the Bush tax cuts and the war on terrorism instead of bolstering Medicare, Social Security, and some of the programs Clinton launched to hire more teachers and police.
"Rich folks like me, what are we sacrificing?" Clinton asked rhetorically. "We have to expend energy to open the envelopes containing our tax cuts." (snip)
Several dozen demonstrators, many carrying signs for Republican candidates, briefly urged motorists to honk in protest outside the Hilton. Police ordered them to disperse.
"I think he represents the ultimate form of hypocrisy," said Chi Young, a 20-year-old Beaverton man. "Democrats are always talking about campaign finance reform and here he is at a millionaire's club fund-raiser for Democrats.
Lou Beres, executive director of the Christian Coalition of Oregon, also took part in the protest, saying Clinton was a poor role model for young people after his sexual involvement with an intern, which he lied about.
Bradbury, [the Democrat who wants to replace Republican Senator Gordon Smith] said he wasn't at all concerned about associating with an impeached president whose administration was tainted with scandal. (snip)

People are losing their homes, firefighters and others lives are at risk, some have died fighting these fires. But no Democrat gives any of this a passing thought.
Is that photo for real?
Talk about offending your hosts!
No wonder the Mohammedans hate us.
The man has no shame.
nor does his daughter.
Yeah.
She should have been wearing a fez.
What a flaming jerk! I'd love to see the type of accounting he does on his own tax return, and furthermore, if Clinton really cares about all of these bleeding heart socialist liberal commie causes why isn't he donating all of his new found wealth to support his beloved causes?
Oregon is burning? Too bad. Firemen are dying? Too bad. Homes are going up in flames? Too bad.
The Lefties didn't bat an eyelash.
Watching federal money go to tax cuts? Um, Bill, a tax cut means my money - the money I earned - goes to me. So sorry he has a problem with the war on terrorism. We wouldn't have to be spending all that "federal money" on the war if he had done anything about terrorism, including accepting Sudan's offer to turn over Bin Laden, when he had the chance.
And heaven help us that we don't use that "federal money" on hiring more teachers and police in our local school districts and towns. Not the federal government's responsibility, Dollar Bill.
