You don't understand that over 50 percent pay no or little direct national income tax. They think their Social Security "contribution" is in a special account with their name on it. Social Security will in fact mail citizens a tabulation of how much SS tax they have paid over the years. Many Americans do mind higher taxes, especially if the tax hikes are on the "rich and greedy." Many see themselves as in the "poor and needy" category and look for government to "he'p them."
