Does God intervene? Dennis Prager examines history of those who bless and who curse the Jews

In 1973, during the Arab embargo on oil exports that followed the Yom Kippur War between Israel and Egypt, many Americans had to deal with embargo-induced hour-long lines at gas stations, gas rationing, and various setbacks to the economy. As a result, some called for our abandonment of Israel for the sake of oil.

Those voices were not heard among evangelical Christians.

In fact, in a television broadcast from his church to his many followers, the Rev. Jerry Falwell said that he would sooner give up his car and ride a bicycle than yield to Arab blackmail. Citing Genesis (12:3), he explained that God "will bless those who bless the Jews and curse whoever curses the Jews."

I have since heard this over and over from lay Christians calling my radio show and from Christian leaders with whom I have shared platforms.

I heard this again this past weekend in Colorado Springs, Colo., at the 25th Anniversary Celebration of Focus on the Family, where I spoke to a few thousand supporters of that influential evangelical organization. There are many reasons for the support of conservative Christians for Israel – along with social conservatives, the only group giving such support – but their belief that God blesses those who bless the Jews and curses those who curse the Jews plays a central role.

When I first heard this verse cited by the Rev. Falwell, I certainly found it encouraging to hear a major Christian figure say this to fellow Christians. But perhaps because I had just completed graduate work in the social sciences, my rational faculties simply dismissed the idea as more quaint than believable.

Over time, however, that quote stayed with me. Eight years later, when Rabbi Joseph Telushkin and I wrote a book explaining anti-Semitism ("Why the Jews? The Reason for Antisemitism," Simon & Schuster), we noted this verse. But now, after seeing the resurgence of anti-Semitism in the Arab and Muslim worlds and in Europe, after being asked by the publisher to write a new version of the book, and after hearing Christians repeatedly cite this verse, I feel compelled to finally take a position: Is this verse biblical poetry or verifiably true?

I am increasingly convinced that it is verifiably true.

I think of Spain, for example. One of the world's mightiest powers and most developed cultures in the 15th century, in 1492 it reached its zenith when it sent Christopher Columbus on a voyage that changed history. But the same year, it also expelled all its Jews and intensified the Spanish Inquisition against the many forced Jewish converts to Catholicism (converses). Spain then descended into a 500-year status as "the sick man of Europe."

I think of Germany (and Austria) as the cultural and intellectual center of Europe, if not the world, before World War II. Then Germany (with Austrians' help) murdered nearly every Jew in Europe. Germany lost over seven million people, was divided for a generation, and while it now thrives materially, culturally Germany has become irrelevant. Ask anyone, even an intellectual, to name one living German.

And I think about the world today. Look at who most blesses the Jews and who most curses them, and you decide whether the verse in Genesis has validity.

It is the United States that has, since its inception, most blessed the Jews and that does so almost alone today – in its support of the Jewish state against those who wish to exterminate it. By almost any reckoning, America has been, and remains, the most blessed of countries.

And it is the Arab world that curses the Jews. It rivals Nazi Germany for the ubiquity and intensity of its Jew-hatred. Look at its state. According to Arab scholars appointed by the United Nations to report on the state of Arab society, that part of the world lags behind the rest of humanity, including in most instances sub-Saharan Africa, in virtually every social, moral and intellectual indicator. And there is no question but that its half-century long preoccupation with destroying Israel has only increased the Arab world's woes.

No one can prove it is God who actively blesses those who bless the Jews and curses those who curse them. But, at the same time, the evidence historically and this very moment suggests that there is indeed a real connection between the state of a society and its treatment of the Jews.

Most Christians have experienced this as well: "I will bless those who bless you and curse those who curse you." I've seen it happen many times.

It might be the will of God, but it might also be that a society who values the intelligent, enterprising, productive, and thoughtful is a good and a prospering society.

A society like South Africa, that hates anyone who works, who produces, and tries to kill them... that envies instead of emulates...the worthwhile people...gets what is has coming to it.

Just as God dried up the Islamic world into a total desert AFTER it adopted Islam--prior to that is was just semi arid and the Bible referred to the FOREST of Arabia (!!!)...so He has been drying up Rhodesia and South Africa into a barren desert in the hands of those who stole the land from its creators and developers who loved it and made it worthwhile.

Prior to the ANC take over, in `994, South Africa was a HUGE supporter and friend of Israel.

Which " society " in South Africa " hates " those who are productive, dear. You paint with far too broad a brush.

Goodness, those poor Boers still there. Note my post on the Korean thread. I am afraid they will not only be killed, but EATEN!

Yes, of course, the Jews were always valued by the Boer society, of course, would have to be, for the Boers as Calvinists would have the same attitude toward Jews as we conservative Protestants do here in USA...

But that is just ancient history, "dear," or do you know something I don't? You don't think Boer "society" as you put it could ever come back from the grave, do you?

Actually, the Afrikaners ( don't call them " BOERS " ) and their Calvinist heritage, were pretty nasty anti-Semites. They were pro-Israel and on VERY friendly terms with Israel ; however, were NOT , from the inception , particularly tolerant of their own Jews ... go figure.

Not every Protestant sect, in America , was / is all that tolerant of Jews. And, dear, Afrikaners aren't the same as Americans ; just as the French, Germans,English , etc. aren't.

I wasn't the one who said that thire is a Boer society ". You claimed that South African society " hates " those who are productive, and I countered with what I did. You don't appear to know all that much at all, about South Africa, nor South Africans. Yes. I DO know far more about that country and her people, than you do. :-)

Will the Afrikaners regan control of South Africa ? I have no idea; but, I doubt that that is in the cards, in the near future. As many, as can ( those with skills in the computer field ), of the Gen Xers, in South Africa, have / are in the process ( both whites and blacks, BTW ) of fleeing . There ARE large contingencies, of these folks, in various parts of the USA. Some have gone to England. Holland won't take them.

The whites, still in South Afdrica, will NOT be eaten by the blacks. The Xhosa weren't cannibals and I doubt that they'll start now. The UN and the Wesy, would send in food and the South Africans, though Mbeki IS Muggabe's protoge, won't do as Mugabe has done in Zimbabwe.

Calvinism certainly does NOT lead one to believe thatGod still has plans for Isreal, in fact one of the offshoots os Calvinism is the idea of RECONSTRUCTIONISM and the idea of the Church taking the place of Israel in God's heart as His chosen people. That means Calvinism has many more problems than pre-destination.

But as for me and my House, I will bump for Israel!

P.S to all....Dr. Alan Keyes is in Israel today, where the Israeli people hold him in the highest honor and esteem...because he has without a doubt been a leader of those who indeed bless Israel...Pray for him and his safe and productive travels, if you will.

I dunno John. England threw the Jews out in the 13th century (Edward I of Braveheart) and they did pretty well afterwards (well, they DID let them back in during the Enlightenment).

Anyone who seriously believes that natural disasters occur in areas God is seeking to punish and don't in areas that "behave properly" needs mental help.

they DID let them back in during the Enlightenment

Jews returned to England in the 17th Century at the invitation of Oliver Cromwell, in accordance with his evangelical Christian belief.

Keep in mind that there is only a small group, the elect, a remnant that we are talking about being blessed. VERY SMALL....blessed along with any believing Chrisitians,Gentiles. Even Jesus in Rev put a curse on Jews who say they are jews but He considers not Jews.

Rev 2: 9 I know thy works, and tribulation, and poverty, but thou art rich and I know the blasphemy of them which say they are Jews, and are not, but are the synagogue of Satan.

No religious believer could ever agree with you.

"He that cometh to God must believe that He exists, and that he IS A REWARDER of them that truly seek him." A zillion texts promise blessings, yes--material, visible ones--for right belief and practice, and punishings for false belief and conduct.

Even George Bush recently quoted from the Book of Deuteronomy, which is especially full of those. He said "I set before you life and death, therefore choose life." That itself is the utmost reward perhaps, and punishment also, if one will have it.

Obviously you are a stranger to this all, so you weren't the target audience of my remark.

when you say 'mental help', I guess you are referring to psychologists, psychiatrists, or maybe a witch doctor? Putting faith in these professions is idol worshop. It is believing in something other than god. these professions don't do any good, they are merely offering us something to believe in besides god. You've been indoctrinated in an unfortunate manner, but the fact that you believe the things you've been taught is very harmful not only to you, but to your offspring. god remembers what you say, think and feel, you should be careful and re-evaluate much.
