* GUN CONTROL: Perata has a constitutional amendment that would put a five-cent tax on each bullet sold in California to raise money for hospital emergency rooms. Perata is also one of the authors of twin bills that would allow gun manufacturers to be sued for damage caused by their weapons.

* SMOKING: A bill that would raise the legal smoking age from 18 to 21 is moving through the Senate. Assemblyman Paul Koretz, D-West Hollywood, says his proposal would make it tougher for minors to get cigarettes.

* WORKERS: California could be the first state to allow workers to take paid leaves from their jobs to care for a new child or seriously ill family member if the Assembly approves a bill by Sen. Sheila Kuehl, D-Santa Monica. Other job-related bills would tie the state minimum wage to increases in inflation, authorize binding arbitration of farm labor disputes and require companies that offer severance pay for managers to also provide it for hourly employees.

If the amendment passed that allows gun manufacturers to be sued for damage their product causes (with no malfunction of said weapons-they're not saying defective), could one then sue car manufacturers for damage their product causes? That could be some BIG money there!

So the good, honest citizens of California who enjoy visiting the range on weekends get to subsidize the damage done by gangbangers in their war for drug turf. Makes sense to me. NOT

Since most of the gangbangers are not buying their weapons through 'traditional' channels to avoid those time consuming Brady checks, what makes anyone think they are not buying their ammo from the same sources. Those that cause the most visits to the ER, would be paying NOTHING!

Why not put a .05 tax on crack and meth and let the users pay for the damage.

Or what about a tax on those do-rags the gangs wear on their heads?

A .10 levy on Malt beverages might be appropriate.

No. California has had a law on the books that specifically protected gun manufacturers and retailers from product liability suits. The legislature plans to delete the law to expose the manufacturers and retailers. The problem arises when a gun is used in a crime. You must determine if it was acquired BEFORE or AFTER the legislature makes this change. If acquired before, then you have an "ex post facto" problem e.g. the manufacturer and retailer legally sold the product with protection from suits. Once again, the idiots in the legislature don't have their heads screwed on straight.

We've been talking about doing the same thing. Take a truck to Nevada and buy thousands or rounds. We also have a CA corporation and we're trying to think of ways of selling ammunition through our corporation. If the $.05 tax goes through we will be sure to buy thousands of rounds before it goes through and do something like the above after that. We won't pay the $.05 tax.

It appears that it is time to build a very high wall around Kalifornia, with no windows or doors, just so that we can keep these nuts confined there, and so that they will stop contaminating the rest of the country.

I wonder if there is something in the water in Kalifornia that causes all the mutants. They seem to have a higher number of nuts than the rest of the nation combined.
