If they really give a damn about the forests, they'll demand thinning and road building so that there is a reasonable mix of all ages of trees. That mix will be species dependant; in some cases even age management works best. In any case, the mix needs to be economic. If less than 12 inches (or whatever) trees are not worth cutting, cut enough over that so the industry doesn't need subsidies to survive. Roads are needed to get the stuff out. Treatment and sensible placement for winter is not that hard to do... The siltation from a decent road is nothing compared to the mud flows that will hit this winter/spring due to the full burns.
