He'll just run as an independent. Folks in D.C. would still vote for him.

Even after the bad names were removed from the list, he still had enough to get on the ballot.

Then why did they deny him a place on the ballot?

If he runs as an independent, he must return the $$$ he received as a democrat, hence the "write-in" idea.

Well, isn't that a nice little loophole.

He didn't use volunteers to collect the signatures so he paid a few people $1 per signature. I guess it was much easier to fill the pages themselves than go out and collect signatures. Getting 2000 signatures for a sitting mayor in a city the size of DC should have been a no-brainer.

Then why did they deny him a place on the ballot?

Because the judge or official who decided the case questioned the integrity of the people who were paid to collect the signatures and decided that the whole system of collecting signatures was probably crooked. I read that if he wants to run as an Indy, he needs to collect 3,000 signatures. LOL! As a write-in candidate, he'll have to rely on people knowing how to spell his name. He's also exploring the option of having a rubber stamp with his name on it available at the polls so that people can "write-in" his name without any trouble. I haven't heard whether they will allow him to do that yet.

This may have been sabotage by the local Democrats. Williams isn't exactly the most popular guy with the Marion Barry wing of the party.

Haven't seen the Court of Appeals opinion yet. What the Election Board said, however, was that even though the petitions might contain 2,000 valid signatures (as the Registrar had found to be the case), the fraud committed by the petition circulators was so pervasive that, without a full explanation by them of what had been done, there was no way the Board could find that enough valid signatures had been obtained. Since the petition circulators had either not appeared in response to subpoenas or had taken the Fifth, the Board found against the Mayor.

I suspect we will find that the Court of Appeals found that the Election Board's decision was not arbitrary or irrational and therefore affirmed it.

The DC Court of Appeals opinion can be found at the address below. Sorry, but I don't know how to do this as a link:

If that isn't a ringing endorsement of school vouchers, what is?

This is weird, why would an incumbent Democrat resort to this kind of thing?

"Getting 2000 signatures for a sitting mayor in a city the size of DC should have been a no-brainer. "

Well, they have to be able to read and write.
