"Winds have been clocked at over 45 mph this afternoon in the fire region".
We live over the hill to the east; smoke pretty sparce today, more yesterday.
Don't want to sound harsh, but I'm personally glad the wind is away from our ranch.

You are not being harsh. When fires the size of this mother are blazing, you want to be on the up wind side.
