MCAULIFFE: TOO MUCH TIME ADRIFT IN THE NEVADA SUN?

____________________________________________________
Stymied By Republican Accomplishments And America's Support For President Bush, Terry Turns To His Ol' Standby: Unfounded Partisan Attacks.
____________________________________________________

DESPERATE ATTACK #1

MCAULIFFE'S PARTISAN POLITICAL FANTASY

McAuliffe Charged That The President's Economic Forum Was "A Glorified Photo Opportunity And Fund-Raiser." "'This, folks, is nothing more than a glorified photo opportunity and fund-raiser,' McAuliffe told a group of senior citizens as Democrats gathered for their summer meeting. 'There is no seat at the table for average Americans.'"
(Ron Fournier, "Democratic Chairman Calls White House Economic Forum 'A Glorified Fund-Raiser,'" The Associated Press, August 9, 2002)

McAuliffe Later Said That Forum Attendees May Have To "Write A Check To The RNC" And That "There's No Seat At The Table For Democrats." "And now, instead of a plan that will address Americans' economic vulnerabilities, we get a staged forum in Waco next week to address Republican political vulnerabilities. In order to get an invitation to this photo-op, you need to march in lockstep with this Administration . . . and maybe even write a check to the RNC. But there's no seat at the table for average Americans. There's no seat at the table for Democrats. There's no seat at the table for members of Congress. Every seat at the table has a sign that says: 'Reserved For Special Interests Only.'"
(Terry McAuliffe, Remarks At DNC Summer Meeting, August 10, 2002)

MCAULIFFE'S PAINFUL REALITY

At Least 43 Forum Attendees Have Donated To Democrat Candidates And Party Organizations.
("Preliminary Media Guide," The President's Economic Forum, August 13, 2002; Center For Responsible Politics Website, www.opensecrets.org, August 10, 2002)

Since 1990, Forum Attendees Have Given Over $255,000 To Democrats.
("Preliminary Media Guide," The President's Economic Forum, August 13, 2002; Center For Responsible Politics Website, www.opensecrets.org, August 10, 2002)

Guest Speakers At The Forum Are Respected Leaders In Their Fields. Panelists include Doug McCarron, General President of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters; Tom Donohue, President and CEO of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce; Michael Novak, business ethicist at the American Enterprise Institute; Charles Schwab, Chairman and CEO of Charles Schwab, Inc; Karen Kerrigan, President of the Small Business Survival Committee; John Chambers, President and CEO of Cisco Systems; Glen Barton, CEO of Caterpillar; and Charles Vest, President of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
("Preliminary Media Guide," The President's Economic Forum, August 13, 2002)

Several Forum Speakers Are Financial And Political Supporters Of Democrats, Including:

Doug McCarron, General President of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters, Supported Al Gore For President And Helped Direct Over $4 Million In Union Donations To Democrats In The 2000 Election Cycle.
(Robert Novak, "Baucus Takes A Beating," Chicago Sun-Times, May 20, 2001; Richard Keil, "Bush's Economic Forum To Feature Contributors In Leading Roles," Bloomberg News, August 8, 2002)

Charles Vest, President Of M.I.T., Donated To Senator Kennedy.
(Elisabeth Bumiller, "Bush's Forum On Economy Is To Feature GOP Donors," The New York Times, August 9, 2002)

Terry McAuliffe Was The Moving Force Behind The Infamous Lincoln Bedroom Fund-Raisers At The Clinton White House. McAuliffe's "first [fundraising] project was to organize breakfasts, luncheons, and coffees with the President for about twenty 'major supporters' at a time ¯ to 'offer these people an opportunity to discuss issues and exchange ideas with the President.' McAuliffe's second [fundraising] project was to offer the very top supporters 'overnights' at the White House."
(Senate Governmental Affairs Committee, "Final Report On Investigation Of Illegal Or Improper Activities in Connection With 1996 Federal Election Campaigns," March 10, 1998)

Fellow Democrat Bill Bradley Dismissed McAuliffe As "Primarily A Fund-Raiser, Not A Voice Of Opposition." "Democratic National Committee Chairman Terry McAuliffe is more of a functionary, Bradley said, leaving the role unfilled. 'He is primarily a fund-raiser, not a voice of opposition,' Bradley said."
(Mike Glover, "Bradley: Democrats Must Sharpen Differences With Bush," The Associated Press, June 23, 2001)

Terry Needs A New Speechwriter: He Invoked The "Photo Op" Rhetoric Before When Describing A Meeting Between President Bush And The Pope. "'Sitting there doing a photo op with . . . the Holy Father at some point isn't going to do anything to help the Catholic voter who just lost a job and is worried about providing health care for a loved one.'"
(Scott Lindlaw, "Bush Courts Catholic Vote," The Associated Press, July 7, 2001)

DESPERATE ATTACK #2

MCAULIFFE'S PARTISAN POLITICAL FANTASY

McAuliffe Charged That President Bush Has Not Used His Power. "Mr. President, you haven't used your power to restore economic growth . . . to enhance retirement security . . . to improve health care . . . to invest in education . . . to protect the environment."
(Terry McAuliffe, Remarks At DNC Summer Meeting, August 10, 2002)

MCAULIFFE'S PAINFUL REALITY

The President Has Acted For The Betterment Of All Americans:

Economic Growth

The President Provided Major Tax Relief For Americans. "The President proposed and signed tax relief that boosted our economy, created jobs, and put money in people's pockets when they needed it most. The President also signed an economic stimulus bill giving short-term help to displaced workers and long-term stimulus to create more jobs across America."
(The White House, "A Record Of Accomplishment For The American People," August 3, 2002)

The President Proposed And Received Trade Promotion Authority. The President proposed and signed "Trade Promotion Authority legislation to help create new American jobs and boost our economy by opening foreign markets to U.S. products and services."
(The White House, "A Record Of Accomplishment For The American People," August 3, 2002)

Retirement Security

President Bush Proposed And The House Approved Legislation Protecting Workers' Retirement Savings. The President's plan required companies to:

(1) set one standard for executives and employees;
(2) give a 30-day notice before any blackout period;
(3) hold company executives responsible for treating workers' assets as carefully as they do their own;
(4) provide independent investment advice for workers; and
(5) regularly give information to workers about their accounts. The House approved a bill "based on principles President Bush outlined for pension reform."
(President Bush, Radio Address To The Nation, February 2, 2002; "House, Senate Begin To Take Measure Of Fallout From Enron," National Journal's Congress Daily, April 11, 2002)

Democrat Senate Leader Daschle Refused To Allow Pension Reform On The Floor. Daschle told Senator Kennedy "he would not let Kennedy offer his far-reaching pension reform bill . . . ."
(Alexander Bolton, "Democrats' Tiff Stalls Pension Bill," The Hill, July 10, 2002)

Health Care

Last Summer President Bush Proposed Prescription Drug Benefits For Seniors. "These are principles which will strengthen one of our nation's most sacred obligations, the health of our senior citizens. We'll protect seniors now, offering exciting new services and more choices to seniors in the future, and guarantee prescription drug coverage. . . . That's my administration's commitment today, and its exciting new vision for health care in America."
(President Bush, Remarks By The President On Medicare, July 12, 2001)

The House Approved A Prescription Drug Measure.
(H.R. 4954, Roll Call #282: Passed 221-208: R 212-8; D 8-199; I 1-1, June 28, 2002)

Daschle "Dashed The Hopes For New Prescription Drug Coverage To Help Older Americans . . . ." "The Senate yesterday dashed the hopes for new prescription drug coverage to help older Americans this year . . . [F]or the fourth time in eight days, the Senate failed to agree on the broader goal of subsidizing drug costs for the elderly. . . . [T]he foundering of proposals to provide drug coverage for older people marked a failure of the Democratic-led Senate to deliver on a top objective."
(Amy Goldstein and Helen Dewar, "Drug Plans For Seniors Defeated," The Washington Post, August 1, 2002)

Education

The President Led The Effort To Enact A Sweeping Bipartisan Education Reform Law, "The No Child Left Behind Act of 2001."
(H.R.1, House Roll Call #497: Passed 381-41: R 183-33; D 198-6; I 0-2, December 13, 2001; H.R.1, Senate Roll Call #371, Passed 87-10: R 45-3; D 42-6; I 0-1, December 18, 2001)

CNN's Lou Dobbs Labeled The President's Education Law The "Most Substantial" Education Reform Plan In More Than Three Decades. "President Bush today signed into law a sweeping education reform bill, widely regarded as the largest, most substantial of the country's education system in more than three decades. The 'No Child Left Behind' act is intended to help some of the neediest students in the country's 90,000 public schools."
(CNN's "Lou Dobbs Moneyline," January 8, 2002)

Environment

President Bush's Clear Skies Initiative Will Cut The Three Worst Air Pollutants By 70%.
("The President's Commitment To Environmental Protection," The White House Website, www.whitehouse.gov, August 10, 2002)

President Bush's Global Climate Initiative Will Reduce Greenhouse Gases By 18%.
("The President's Commitment To Environmental Protection," The White House Website, , www.whitehouse.gov, August 10, 2002)

DESPERATE ATTACK #3

MCAULIFFE'S PARTISAN POLITICAL FANTASY

McAuliffe Said The President Hasn't Acted On Corporate Reform. "President Bush was unwilling to spend political capital to make the necessary corporate reforms. But even worse, his own past leaves him unable to lead on this issue."
(Terry McAuliffe, Remarks At DNC Summer Meeting, August 10, 2002)

MCAULIFFE'S PAINFUL REALITY

President Bush Signed Aggressive Legislation To Prohibit And Punish Corporate Abuse. "[This] legislation ... [will] jail cheating business executives and regulate the accounting profession through an independent board with broad new powers. The corporate-accountability bill ... impose[s] the strongest federal regulation over American finance since the New Deal securities laws in the 1930s. It is intended to help restore public confidence in corporate America."
(James Kuhnhenn, "Senate, House Agree On Bill To Whip Corporations Into Financial Shape," Knight Ridder/Tribune News Service, July 25, 2002)

President Bush Spoke Out Strongly Against Corporate Abuse. "[W]e will use the full weight of the law to expose and root out corruption. My administration will do everything in our power to end the days of cooking the books, shading the truth, and breaking our laws. . . . Corporate officers who benefit from false accounting statements should forfeit all money gained by their fraud. . . . Yet when a company uses deception -- deception accounting to hide reality, executives should lose all their compensation -- all their compensation -- gained by the deceit. Corporate leaders who violate the public trust should never be given that trust again."
(President Bush, Remarks On Corporate Responsibility, July 9, 2002)

The Bush Justice Department Has Aggressively Pursued Corporate Executives. Since the corporate scandals erupted, the U.S. Justice Department has: obtained a conviction against Arthur Andersen LLP; arrested five executives of Adelphia Communications Corp. and two from WorldCom; opened a criminal investigation of AOL Time Warner, Inc.; and indicted the former head of ImClone Systems.
(Attorney General John Ashcroft, Press Conference, August 1, 2002; Mike Allen, "Bush Pledges More Corporate Fraud Arrests," The Washington Post, July 30, 2002; Alec Klein and Dan Eggan, "U.S. Opens Criminal AOL Probe," The Washington Post, August 1, 2002; Ben White and Justin Gillis, "Former ImClone Chief Indicted," The Washington Post, August 8, 2002)

DESPERATE ATTACK #4

MCAULIFFE'S PARTISAN POLITICAL FANTASY

McAuliffe Called The Republican Hispanic Outreach Effort "A Joke." "Opening the Democratic National Committee's three-day summer meeting, McAuliffe said, 'The president invites mariachi bands to the White House, and that's supposed to be some sort of outreach effort . . . . I think the Republican outreach is a joke,' he said . . . . He accused GOP leaders of relying on superficial efforts, such as photo opportunities with Hispanics and teaching Republican officials to speak Spanish. 'What good does that do? It allows you to speak in their native tongue as you speak out of both sides of your mouth,' McAuliffe said."
(Ron Fournier, "DNC Chairman Criticizes Bush, GOP," The Associated Press, August 9, 2002)

MCAULIFFE'S PAINFUL REALITY

Hispanic Voters Support President Bush. A poll commissioned by the New Democrat Network shows that President Bush has erased a 20-point deficit among Hispanics since 2000, and is now tied with Al Gore. Pollster Sergio Bendixen said, "Democrats are in 'great danger' because the party has failed to counter Mr. Bush's political offensive among Hispanics."
(John Harwood, "Bush Outreach To Hispanics Pays Dividends," The Wall Street Journal, May 21, 2002)

Hispanics Support The President's Position On Issues. Polling data shows that 63% of Hispanics say Medicare needs to be reformed; 62% support the President's position on Social Security reform; 73% want school choice vouchers; and 60% stand behind the Bush tax cuts.
(RNC Press Release, July 25, 2001)

Republicans Have Voted For Programs That Greatly Benefit Hispanics. The Republican budget includes a pay raise for the armed forces, including over 100,000 Hispanics and increases education spending for Hispanic-serving institutions. Republican tax relief will benefit 15 million Hispanics. Republicans passed legislation creating a simpler and more efficient immigration application process, as well as legislation that will allow immigrants to stay with their families in the United States while their immigration papers are reviewed.
(House Republican Conference, "House GOP Accomplishments For Hispanics," May 1, 2002)

DESPERATE ATTACK #5

MCAULIFFE'S PARTISAN POLITICAL FANTASY

McAuliffe Accused Republicans Of Being "Hostile To African-American Interests On Issue After Issue." "The Republican Party can't escape their agenda, which is hostile to African-American interests on issue after issue. George Bush . . . proposes cuts in the very training programs -- like Youth Opportunity Grants -- that can help young African-Americans start their careers. Two out of every five African-American seniors rely on Social Security as their only source of income, but Republicans want to privatize the program, cutting benefits and turning Social Security into a high-stakes investment gambit . . . at a time when the stock market is more volatile than ever."
(Terry McAuliffe, Remarks At The National Association Of Black Journalists, 27th Annual Convention, August 3, 2002)

MCAULIFFE'S PAINFUL REALITY

President Bush Proposed A Five Percent Increase In Funding For Job Training That Targets Disadvantaged Youth.
(Office Of Management And Budget, "Budget Message Of The President: FY 03, Department Of Labor," February 2002)

President Bush Proposed A 30% Hike In Federal Funding For Historically Black Colleges. "The President has committed to increasing funding for HBCUs and for HSIs by 30 percent between 2001 and 2005. The budget proposes $213 million for HBCUs, $51 million for Historically Black Graduate Institutions, and $89 million for Hispanic Serving Institutions to keep these institutions on track to achieve the President's goal."
(Office Of Management And Budget, "Budget Message Of The President FY 03, Department Of Education," February 2002)

FYI!

If you want on or off this Take Back Congress.org ping list, please let know. My former ping list crashed with my computer thanks to a virus someone sent me using Free Republic in the title which I downloaded thinking a Freeper wanted to help. Big mistake and I should have known better! Just made some of us more determined than ever to get the TRUTH out!

We did it in the 2000 Presidential election, the Florida fiasco, and Freepers are going to do it in this Fall's election -- the TRUTH will get out because Freepers will make sure of it!

Thanks for all your help!

I don't know about all of you but I believe McAuliffe and his lies must be stopped and they must be stopped now! I beg Freepers of all stripes to join together to fight this garbage. If we don't, we will have the clintons back in the White House sooner than we think. Is it worth it to pick the President apart on every little thing and end up with traitors to America? Please rethink your positions! Let's join hands and join hearts - and let's show the RATS what we are made of! We did it in Florida - now let's do it again!

Just sent it to ~50 major news outlets, subject line : "De-bunking the DNC (doing the press's job...AP's Ron Fournier neglected to mention....)"

Thanks, PKM. It's very satisfying to send off the truth, even if only one secretary reads it, quits and joins the good fight.(^:

Thanks much!

I figure it is like the general election in 2000 -- one vote at a time. Florida sure showed all of us how much each vote does count!
