In truth, I believe some of these quotes (maybe not all) can be traced to Quayle. See the "urban legends" website (snopes.com)....
Not that any of this makes Gore any smarter, of course. He's still an idiot. He just probably didn't say these particular dumb things. He's said plenty of other dumb things though.
I was a huge Bush/Quayle supporter and actually kept a list of Dan's misquotes at the time because I got a kick out of them.
According to the clinton justice department the guns are to blame, it makes no difference if a knife was used...
