HARARE (Reuters) - Zimbabwean police have summoned six white farmers to appear in court on Friday to face charges for defying a government eviction order, police and a farmers' group said on Thursday.

Jenni Williams, a spokeswoman for the Justice for Agriculture farmers' group, said the six farmers from the southwestern Matabeleland province were believed to be the first to be charged for defying President Robert Mugabe's August 8 deadline to handover their farms to landless blacks.

Farm officials say nearly 60 percent of the 2,900 white farmers targeted for eviction are defying the government order.

A police spokesman told Reuters the six farmers would appear at Gwanda magistrate court in southern Zimbabwe on charges of violating the land acquisition law.

The charge carries a fine or a two-year jail term.

Shameful silence in response to ethnic cleansing in Zimbabwe*** The failure to recognise the ethnic cleansing of whites has old roots. Blame it on a noxious blend of history and bigotry. In the liberal West a white African is invariably characterised as a racist buffoon, the last vestige of a colonial past that we would much rather forget. The whites of Zimbabwe are spectacularly unfashionable. Cut off from Western society, they have not learnt the arts of obfuscation and spin. They generally tend to say what they mean. Sometimes their blunt speaking offends our more cultivated sensibilities. Most Western liberals regard them with condescension and disdain. And as for their dress sense! Men in shorts, women in 1950s-style floral dresses, those strange clipped accents ...not like us, not like us at all.***

We're taking your land. And because you didn't move quick enough, we're taking your freedom too!

Let that be a lesson to you freedom loving rabble-rousers.

What a sick guy that Mugabe is.

On the positive side, in a few years we will all get to donate money to ease the starvation there.

And we aren't invading this country, why? I don't seem to hear any United Nations outrage against the murders and outright violence against a particular class of people.

No, we will not "get" to, we will be forced to donate money. The American taxpayer will foot the bill, as usual.

Cincy, this will go into yet another standalone mass email.. The "Out of Africa" series.

Which I'll continue despite the nastygram from the Boston Globe demanding I drop them from my list because they wanted "letters, not propaganda..."

Funny how links to stories from mainstream and alternative press is "propaganda..."

Years? The hunger has already started. The crops currently in the fields will probably rot there. The starvation will begin before Christmas.

Malawi minister says government should give land to evicted Zimbabwe white farmers ( Thu Aug 15, 2002 - 1:07 PM ET) By RAPHAEL TENTHANI, Associated Press Writer [Full Text] BLANTYRE, Malawi - A top Malawian agricultural official called on the government Thursday to give land to Zimbabwe's evicted white farmers so they could help develop local agriculture and ease the country's hunger crisis.

Andrew Chioza, deputy minister for agriculture, said the country's farm industry would thrive under the guidance of Zimbabwe's white commercial farmers, now facing eviction from their homes under Zimbabwe's land redistribution program.

Not only could Zimbabwean farmers help lessen a severe food shortage threatening 3 million people with starvation, they also could provide desperately needed jobs in the impoverished southern African country, he said.

Chioza said the potential for a booming farm industry was vast, with large swaths of land lying fallow, and other areas underutilized. But the country lacked the needed investment.

Other southern African countries, including Zambia and Mozambique, have already made overtures to Zimbabwe's white farmers.

As part of its land reform policy, Zimbabwe has targeted 95 percent of the farms owned by white commercial farmers for redistribution to blacks.

Malawi's land laws, which bar foreigners from owning land unless partnering with a Malawi citizen, could complicate efforts to lure Zimbabwe's white farmers.

An editorial Thursday in the Daily Times newspaper lashed the idea.

"There is no land to give away in Malawi," it said.

Foreign Minister Lilian Patel said Thursday the government had not yet been approached by white farmers seeking land.

The government said the issue would be broached at an upcoming meeting with Zimbabwean officials. [End]

Amazing, isn't it?

I still get virus attacks from what I presume to be those "from the Dark Side" who can't stand the idea of alternative viewpoints even being seen by the peons in America.

All I send are collections of links to stories- usually from here, but sometimes from other sites both conservative and Libertarian. My position is, you read and judge for yourself the merits of the stories- although I will append a pithy quote to the link if I can locate one.

I have always contended that one of the goals of the Left is to utterly squelch & silence any opposition, even by word or thought, and nonsense like this tends to confirm that.

If you ever go to DU or other socialist websites you will see that they stand firmly behind Mugabe and his thugs. I saw one website about world politics that labeled Mugabe a moderate!

They should have left years ago. The handwriting has been on the wall, the same as it was for Jews in 1935 in Germany.
