Wow. Who would have thought that serving one's country as a member of the uniformed services was as detrimental as abusing drugs or alcohol? As a veteran, I can say without hesitation that my military service paved the path for my later success in the civilian world. The same goes for those who served with me.
Just who the heck are these homeless vets? I don't doubt that some people leave the military and land upon hard times, but I'm confident they are the exceptions rather than the rule.
My own suspicion is that when some social worker asks a derelict how he ended up on the street, the answer is "The Nam ruined me, man. PTSD and all, ya know." Helpful hint for those asking the questions: Americans have not served in Vietnam for almost three decades. If a twenty or thirty-something "vet" blames "the Nam" for his problems, he's lying. Really.
