AMNESTY FOR ILLEGAL ALIENS? (a question for Freepers)
August 22nd, 2002 | Sabertooth

Posted on 08/22/2002 7:04:53 AM PDT by Sabertooth

This is a vanity post, let's get that straight from the start.

Perhaps the most vain aspect of it is the conceit that it might stay on topic, but I'm going to give it a whirl.

One of the more contentious species of threads encountered on Free Republic are those dealing with the subject of America's immigration policy, particularly with regard to the Illegal Aliens currently in our country. According a range of reasonable sources, the estimates of their numbers here currently here range from six to thirteen million. Whatever the actual count, there are quite a few people now in violation of American immigration law.

One subtopic that inevitably arises is the question of Amnesty:

Should all or some portion of the Illegal Aliens be granted an Amnesty and be thereby allowed to change their status and acquire legal residence in the United States?

That's the question I'd like to put forward to the members of Free Republic.

Almost as inevitably on threads dealing with this subject, flame wars erupt. It's not my purpose to instigate another round of that, they're rather predictable. So I'd like to ask that your comments, if you're inclined to share them, focus on the big picture of American immigration policy, with particular attention to the subject of Amnesty. I'm not interested in the stock and gratuitous divisiveness of race-baiting or referring to the President as "Jorge," or anything of that nature from any quarter. It achieves nothing, it's sulphurous methane heat with no light shed.

I'd also like to avoid ad hominem ambushes. I'm genuinely interested in learning the collective feelings of Free Republic members on this subject. If you're gonna post, I'd like to ask that you ante up with your opinion on the question at hand before engaging the discussion with others. No taking potshots from the obscurity of the sidelines. I'll post my opinion below at #1.

Fair enough?

So, once again, here's the question:

Should all or some portion of the Illegal Aliens be granted an Amnesty and be thereby allowed to change their status and acquire legal residence in the United States?

Several posters have explained why mass deportations will not happen. I happen to like GmbyMan's proposal in post 85. He has the priorities pretty down pat.

I do not see how throwing out hard-working people who are working - even if they entered illegally - helps things out. As a conservative, I consider those "Illegals" to be far better for this country than the hucksters who are demanding reparations for slavery.

Poohbah has covered the logistics on this matter quite well, IMHO. I'll ping him to explain how Points 1 and 2 might apply.

I'll support an amnesty for illegal aliens when we have amnesties for child molestors and murderers. IMHO taking one group of people and deciding they don't need to follow the law is a clear violation of the 14th amendment.

NO AMNESTY

For one, it is rewarding law breaking. Secondly, we were told in 1986 that there would not be another amnesty. Thirdly, amnesties only encourage more law breaking, as has been the case since the 1986 amnesty. Fourth, an amnesty will bring added debt to America, as Illegal Aliens consume more in government programs that they give in taxes. Fifth, given PC group politics and lack of assimilation, we're talking about bring a foreign alien culture into America to set up camp. Fifth, the Hispanic pimps, ala LaRaza, have an agenda to "take back" the southwest. We should not encourage them to do so. Sixth, illegals take away jobs from Americans, as employers illegally lower wages and force-out American born citizens. Seventh, the previous example contributes to higher welfare roles among U.S. citizens, as well as illegal aliens. Eighth, given the corruption, illegals are soaking up social services. Ninth, under the anchor baby "amendment", those illegals who are encouraged to jump our borders for the reward of amnesty, may happen to have children on U.S. soil, and that makes them automatic U.S. citizens. Tenth, with them being automatic U.S. citizens, that allows them to gain a hold in the reconquista of the U.S. through social group politics, family reuinification and a failure to assimilate. This is perpetuated through the shear numbers as a result of this policy, as well as non-enforcement of U.S. immigration policy.

What do the above ten examples tell you? They tell you that the direction we are heading down is ridiculous. In fact, it is ludicrous. What needs to be done?

1)Beef-up of U.S. Border Patrol by 500%
2)Beef-up of INS interior by 1000%
3)Allow the military to patrol the borders, if needed.
4)Prosecute employers if knowingly hiring illegals.
5)Eliminate Welfare to Illegals.
6)Eliminate the "Anchor Baby" Amendment.
7)Eliminate the family reunification clause, instead focusing on benefit to the country on an individual basis.
8)An immigration moratorium of ten years before any more immigration.
9)A cap on immigration of 75,000-100,000 per year after moratorium.
10)80% of immigration should be confined to Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada.

Of course, numbers eight through ten are more direct with immigration reform as opposed to illegal immigration. However, I see those as important issues, too.

I support PART of Title VIII (I support the first two provisions listed, I also support the elimination of the Diveristy Program). I oppose the new restrictions on legal immigration.

Title IX is okay for the most part, but I'd like to see the "following to join" restrictions taken out of that bill, too.

Furthermore, I want the wheat spearated from the chaff in terms of those who are currently in the country. Those who are here to work ought to be allowed to be part of a guest worker program as GmbyMan suggested in Post 85.

In the other 48 major points of the bill (based on your summary), I've got no problem with them, and I'll support them. 48 out of 52 is a pretty high percentage.

The question you have to answer is whether you feel the five areas of disagreement are worth losing the other 48 that we both agree on.

"Free Trade" is a terrible policy. It contributes to the deterioration of America's industrial and manufacturing sector. It contributes to an import-based economy. It contributes to inflation and higher taxes. It is a stupid policy that will destroy this country, economically.

Meanwhile, China is given favored trading status, has a 40% import tariff on our goods, yet we have a 2% tariff on their goods. Is that fair? It's time to analyze what's best for America, and that includes PRO-AMERICAN economic policies.

Oh yes, get rid of Americans for illegals. Don't you love this idea? Get rid of assimilated Americans for third worlders who'll continue to have a seperate identity, drive down wages, put Americans out of work, contribute to higher taxes and welfare, as well as balkanize the country.

What a misguided idea.

Quite simply -- NO amnesty for ANY illegals. Enforcement of American law regarding our borders, and respect for our sovereignty should be the order of the day. Anything less is an abridgement of the Constitution.

Gee, I don't know. Adam Smith? Fernando Valenzueala? F. Hayek? Jakav Smirrnoff? Milton Friedman? Elian Gonzalez?

I think there is tremendous benefit to having workers who are Mexican citizens being allowed to come into this country to do those tasks we no longer want to do.

Any why exactly are these tasks that WE don't want to do anymore? Think about it? It's about wage reduction, the elimination of hiring Americans from jobs, discrimination from Mexicans on worksites, as well as many Americans not wanting to work with people of whom they cannot communicate. Overall, though, the biggest reason is wage reduction at a time of inflation.

All this talk of admitting Mexicans is one more nail in the culture of America. When there are such huge numbers, at a time of group politics and little assimilation, with advocacy groups and lawyers, what do you think will happen? Furthermore, their culture is no where American. With this being the case, and coupled with my points above, it spells disaster for America, especially when groups like LaRaza are advocating an Aztlan.

Do you not understand that we are a sovereign nation with laws? I don't understand how you can condone the illegal invasion. It means the end of America as we know it, and you're giving it a pass. Think in the long term, not in the short. Furthermore, look at trends and voting patterns. You're hoping for the best when there most likely isn't a good outcome in the condoning of illegal immigration.
