AMNESTY FOR ILLEGAL ALIENS? (a question for Freepers)
August 22nd, 2002 | Sabertooth

Posted on 08/22/2002 7:04:53 AM PDT by Sabertooth

This is a vanity post, let's get that straight from the start.

Perhaps the most vain aspect of it is the conceit that it might stay on topic, but I'm going to give it a whirl.

One of the more contentious species of threads encountered on Free Republic are those dealing with the subject of America's immigration policy, particularly with regard to the Illegal Aliens currently in our country. According a range of reasonable sources, the estimates of their numbers here currently here range from six to thirteen million. Whatever the actual count, there are quite a few people now in violation of American immigration law.

One subtopic that inevitably arises is the question of Amnesty:

Should all or some portion of the Illegal Aliens be granted an Amnesty and be thereby allowed to change their status and acquire legal residence in the United States?

That's the question I'd like to put forward to the members of Free Republic.

Almost as inevitably on threads dealing with this subject, flame wars erupt. It's not my purpose to instigate another round of that, they're rather predictable. So I'd like to ask that your comments, if you're inclined to share them, focus on the big picture of American immigration policy, with particular attention to the subject of Amnesty. I'm not interested in the stock and gratuitous divisiveness of race-baiting or referring to the President as "Jorge," or anything of that nature from any quarter. It achieves nothing, it's sulphurous methane heat with no light shed.

I'd also like to avoid ad hominem ambushes. I'm genuinely interested in learning the collective feelings of Free Republic members on this subject. If you're gonna post, I'd like to ask that you ante up with your opinion on the question at hand before engaging the discussion with others. No taking potshots from the obscurity of the sidelines. I'll post my opinion below at #1.

Fair enough?

So, once again, here's the question:

Should all or some portion of the Illegal Aliens be granted an Amnesty and be thereby allowed to change their status and acquire legal residence in the United States?

The answer to that dilemma is to gear the campaign to the Latinos who are legitimately here, most of whom don't want amnesty for illegals. And then crack down on voter fraud, so the illegals don't get to vote.

If you want a fight over less than 8% of the provisions ont his bill, then that's your decision. Personally, I'd rather see a coalition built on the 92.3% of the bill we AGREE on.

In other words, ramrodding the portions of your amnesty down everyone's throats anyway.

Please, tell us, though, how you would prevent every Manny, Moe & Jack--excuse me, Tomas, Julio y Jose from getting on the horn the minute the amnesty comes down from on high (under your plan, of course), and getting all their relatives to run for the borders?

No one - not Bush, not Gephardt, no one has addressed that problem. Everyone says that it wouldn't happen, but let's be realistic here. Most of the illegals that don't have their families with them are busting their collective butts to get them across the border best they can.

And to address a different point, I've got an easy way to round them up: Drive up whatever road they all stand on for cash-only day laborer jobs every day, and pick 'em all up. No, you won't get 'em all, but if you start cracking down, the others'll tell all their friends and relatives to think twice about coming across...

We've got too much unemployment among people who were born here without illegals taking what few jobs there are here.

I'm all for amnesty (this amnesty anyway....):

Amnesty = send them back from whence they came. Alternative to shooting them on site.

That's amnesty.

You seem to jump to a lot of conclusions. I've only pointed out what I could and could not support.

No, I think I got you pretty well pegged. You assert yourself on immigration threads "as if" you are in a position of authority, which when examining your often conflicting arguments is laughable.

Your Modus Operandi time and again is to advocate the removal of the most important parts of an immigration reform bill while suggesting “token”, half-measures that have little impact. Or, likewise, take an Amnesty bill like 245(i) and broaden the bill to include many more illegal aliens while dreaming up meaningless restrictions that have no real effect on controlling illegal immigration. In fact the upshot of your disingenuous immigration proposals is to actually encourage MORE illegal immigration—NOT LESS.

The funny part is how you like to cast yourself as merely acting responsibly and "imply" that only YOU know what is politically feasible and what is not. It's a silly transparent charade you play and one that is not lost on most in this forum.

In reality, you are an exponent of the Beltway's "anything goes" open borders immigration "free for all" agenda and you try mightily to cover that up with cynical proposals that are really meant to destroy any meaningful immigration reform legislation.

In short...You Aren't Fooling Anybody.

Tell me, if someone you knew (friend or relative) had two years of 24/7 experience with a group of people, would you or would you not ask him for information about the people in question?

Sorry, I make up my own opinions in an independent fashion from numerous sources and don't need an "appeal to authority" to be told what to think.

I can assure you that every single one of these open borders amnesty advocates would imediately become raving anti-Mexican nutters if W came out and said he hates Maexicans and that they should all be deported.

So thats what its all about? You hate W so you oppose his policies. I've heard it from a good source that you are a democrap anyway.

You mean, use common sense and human nature to get the problem to solve itself? Leverage instead of brute force?

That's kinda judo-like.

And I have yet to take a single class - maybe I should. Is Jhoon Rhee still alive and kicking?

Now, you're elevating your 10 posts of your brother's opinions on the prior thread and your 3 posts of his opinions on this thread to the level of research?

No poll is perfect, but Zogby tells you what questions they asked, who they asked and how they asked those questions.

We don't even know that your brother asked the "lots of illegal aliens" he encountered a single, pertinent question.

No, your brother's opinions are meaningless when weighed against the results of a scientific poll and what you're doing is not research.

It's obfuscation.

Look that up in your 'Funk and Wagnel', Mr. Aztlan/Reconquista is a belief only subscribed to by a fringe group.

All that's needed for Bush's open borders attitude to change is for all that Mexican oil to dry up. The deal with Fox would be off.

Our borders would be militarized and all the illegals would be deported. The sycophants...I mean staunch Bush supporters would all do an about face and we'd have our sovereignty back.

"...Mr. Avocado..."

I may never be able to look at guacamole, again. At least not without laughing.

I hope none of you mind the 'ping'.

I thought you guys might want to add your 2 cents to this amnesty poll, if you haven't already.

Send them all home. But since that is hardly practical, we should at least close our borders and start now returning those we catch.

Yeah, ping yourself some help. Billyboy doesn't like your open borders kumbaya stuff now, does he? You hate W so you oppose his policies. I've heard it from a good source that you are a democrap anyway.

No, I don't hate W. I despise him and his kind, but I don't hate him. Sorry to have to break it to you, but your "good source" is a liar. I've never even voted for a democrat in my entire life. I've voted for some republicans, and have lived to regret almost every single vote I've cast for the lying traitors, though.

Calling me a "democrap" is funny, coming as it does from someone who posted an SPLC article in support of his position in support of illegal alien invaders. Big Morris Dees fan, are you? ahaha
