Antarctic Sea Ice Increases over Past Two Decades

In a surprising departure from other findings that point to a warming planet, a NASA researcher has found that the amount of ice in the Antarctic increased from 1979 to 1999, as measured by satellites.

Many recent findings have detailed the decline of the ice cap in the Arctic, at the top of the world. These new results from the Southern Hemisphere imply that global climate change involves regional variations.

Changes in ice cover are important not only because they indicate temperature changes that have occurred; the changes can effect future temperatures. With more ice, more solar radiation is reflected away from Earth. The ice also insulates oceans from the atmosphere. Less ice has the opposite effects.

In the new study, published in the Annals of Glaciology, Claire Parkinson of NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center analyzed the length of the sea ice season throughout the Southern Ocean to obtain trends in sea ice coverage. On average, the area where sea ice seasons have lengthened by at least one day per year is roughly twice as large as the area where sea ice seasons have shortened by at least one day per year.

"You can see with this dataset that what is happening in the Antarctic is not what would be expected from a straightforward global warming scenario, but a much more complicated set of events," Parkinson said.

The length of the sea ice season in any particular region or area refers to the number of days per year when at least 15 percent of that area is covered by sea ice. Some areas close to the Antarctic continent have sea ice all year long, but a much larger region of the Southern Ocean has sea ice for a smaller portion of the year, and in those regions the length of the sea ice season can vary significantly from one year to another.

Parkinson also looked at how various regions of the Antarctic compared to one another.

Regionally, the Ross Sea, on average, had its sea ice seasons getting longer, while most of the Amundsen Sea and almost the entire Bellingshausen Sea had their sea ice seasons getting shorter.

"The Antarctic sea ice changes match up well with regional temperature changes," Parkinson said.

The study used data from NASA’s Nimbus 7 Scanning Multichannel Microwave Radiometer (SMMR) and the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) Special Sensor Microwave Imagers (SSMIs).

Yesterday I posted an artical stating a noted Norwegian glacierologist had strongly refuted a Greenpeace claim that an iceberg on Svalbard was receding due to global warming. (Svalbard is one heckuva cold place, 500 miles NORTH of Norway)

Today I found this similar artical discussing the situation at the planet's other pole. Wonder if the envirowackos will have a response?

"Wonder if the envirowackos will have a response?"

Besides denial and more lies??

I'm sure the enviro-wacks will ignore this and continue spouting their lies, but this cuts them off at the knees. Their favorite lie is to predict the ice caps melting and flooding coastal cities, in reality it may just provide a warmer climate that could increase farmland and make for more enjoyable winters.

Good Lord I'm not awake yet. Sorry for the misspellings and typos....sigh...

And now I have to start typing news for the radio station. Glad I'm not on the air today!

I guess that depends on your definition of an "enjoyable winter."

This article is a great find. I'll have to come back on the weekend to check out your previous post.

I'll not forget an article in The Los Angeles Times from about the first couple of weeks of June.

The article was about whale hunts by Alaskan Eskimos.
In an unguarded moment, the Times writer mentioned that although the Eskimos
had been successful in their whale hunt, there was one problem...
after hauling their whale ashore and to the processing plant...
they were needing to find a way to THAW out their catch for butchering/dressing
because the 26 Degree F. air temperature at MID-DAY had caused the whale to freeze solid
during the short trip from the water's edge to the plant.

It's really fun to catch the times when the Political Correctness Propaganda
Compliance Officers at outlets like The Los Angeles Times either simply fail to notice
they've accidentally let the truth slip out...on not caught it due to a weekend
binge or the lingering effects of overuse of their drugs of choice.
Not matter the cause of the slip, it's delicious to spot it when "truth goes over the wall".

I don't know if Shakespeare or some other playwright coined the phrase, but this timeless
aphorism remains relevant today:
"The Truth will out."

This is definitely NOT good news for"Enviro-Wackos"!In fact, this is just about as bad for them and their whole phony movement as it would be for The Race-Baiting,Poverty-Pimps(Jackson,Sharpton,Screwy Louie etc, etc)to se this headline"Racism Officially Ended"!!!

I was thinking of that exact shot from that movie...the funnier thing is that 2,000 years after that(according to the movie) New York was under ice.
