USO Canteen FReeper Style....FReeper FRiday ....GATOR NAVY ......August 23,2002
FRiends of the USO Canteen FReeper Style and Snow Bunny

Posted on 08/23/2002 1:28:27 AM PDT by Snow Bunny

.

.

If you know a Veteran, someone in your family,
friend of the family, neighbor, who served their
country, take a brief moment of your day to thank them.
Thank them for the sacrifice they made
for the better good of their country.

We at Free Republic, and the USO Canteen FReeper Style,
are thankful for every service member
in our military, who has served our great nation.

So, to the men and women who answered the call,
in both times of war and peace, thank you.

.

Message from Snow Bunny to all those who visit the Canteen.

This is how I think of the USO Canteen Freeper Style.
It is like a cottage down a road,
a place where a weary veteran can spend the night.

Since it opened, it is magical how so many
Freepers who post here, feel it too.
It has been so dear how the Freepers
kept making it a cottage - a home-type of place
that had a huge living room
for them to visit in and a dance floor, a library, etc.

Many Veterans have written to me,
saying that the Canteen is like home
to them for the first time since they served.

This is your Canteen -
a respite from our busy
and sometimes troubling world.
Make yourself at home.

..................................................................................................................................

.

The USO Canteen Honors FReepers
who have served, or are now serving their country.

.

You may have a loved one who has served in the past.
We at the FReeper USO Canteen would like to honor each and every one.

Thank You GATOR NAVY for Serving our Country

Because 5 of 6 ships I have been on have been amphibious ships,
or "gators".

Also, my job is navigation, or a 'gator.

I am a Chief Petty Officer and just went
over 20 years service this March.

My ships have been :
USS CROMMELIN (FFG-37) plankowner
USS BRISTOL COUNTY (LST-1198)
USS ST LOUIS (LKA-116)
USS SAN BERNARDINO (LST-1189) decomm crew
USS DUBUQUE (LPD-8)
USS JUNEAU (LPD-10)

I have been stationed in Japan since 1990.
I am currently on shore duty near Tokyo,Japan/

Prior to this tour all my Japan time was in Sasebo, on Kyushu.

I have been happily married for over 9 years to my lovely wife Atsuko.

We have two sons, Takezo, age 7, and Shuzo, age 5.

Here is my son Takezo

Here is my son Shuzo

Although I read FR daily, I don't usually log on unless I want to
reply to a thread. But I will always get back to you (ask Snow Bunny)
sooner or later if you send something my way.

LHAs are still around. Belleau Wood was in Sasebo from 1992 until 2000 when they brought Essex (LHD) over.

Congratulations GATOR NAVY.

Salute and thank you for your service to this great country.

Those LST's are a far cry from the the ones I worked on in the sixties.

Again, Thank You!

I'm posting and running because I'm busy right now.

Aric2000 was one of my first friends I made here at FR. He is a veteren of the Army. Everyone be nice to him, just like you always are. :)

Snow Bunny and Fall Guy, Aric2000 is trying to sell his house in Oregon. You guys might want to hook up and see if his house is where you want to live for the right price. I don't know what town he lives in.

Have a wonderful day everyone. I'll BBL

Before I get off here, I wanted to tell you how nice it is to meet you. You have a beautiful family. Your boys are extremely handsome. It's an honor to meet so many fine human beings and such great Americans here at FR on Fridays.

They're bigger and faster, but still flat-bottomed, shallow-drafted pigs that rolled like hell. 54 degrees rang the bell on the bridge, and we heard the bell many times. That part didn't change from what I've heard ;-)

I post the reference to the Army’s navy periodically – few know about it as it seems to be the best kept (unintentionally) secret of our military.
This is the newer version of the LCU -

You have served your country well, and have been blessed. That family is beautiful. Here's to all the "gators" who keep us safe and free.

The new bride, went crying to her mother. "Momma, I can't get my husband to do anything. I want him to fix up the house, and he keeps putting it off."

"Honey," her mother replied, "after being married to your father for twenty-six years, I've found the only way to get him to do anything is to tell him he's too old."

Bible Camp - what a wonderful place for a son to be.

Yes.
He's 12 and this was his first bible camp, and first extended "away from home". He was so nonchalant about it when we dropped him off, and we worried all week about whether or not he was having fun.
We got a post card from him, and he parodied a "Newsboys" song:

Hello mom and dad, How's life
The money you sent went to the counselor with the knife
I went to camp to have some fun..
But all I do is shovel horse dung.
Send food.

So he obivously must be having a good time.
Mom and dad have survived as well.
