45 and 57 year-olds are not "old and frail." Methinks our "public health" officials are selling us out regarding West Nile.

I would sure like to know when we are going to stop using puny pesticides and go back to DDT? I worked well to save lives before Rachael Carson caused it to be outlawed. Now we die.

i live in Canada, Saskatchewan in fact, and we have been finding dead birds all over the province that have tested positive for west nile. So it's all over here. I can bet alot that waaaay more people have it than we think. How many young and healthy people have gotten it and just never went to the doctor because their symptoms aren't really bad. I know that me and all my friends have been getting sick one after another with slight nausea, general malaise, and "colds", and we are all in the 25 - 30 range. Makes me wonder. Does anyone know if you do get it, do you develop an immunity to it?

I would sure like to know how this got here.

I recall reading, very possibly in a post here, that WNV emerged in the U.S. and Israel (and I think Saudi, if I recall correctly) at basically the same time.

I remember thinking about our "buddy" in Iraq at the time. Also heard, understand I can't verify the source but I caught it here as well, that Castro knew something about this virus, for whatever reason.

No, I don't have stock in a tin foil manufacturer. Just thinking out of the box a bit.

My wife is just getting over a sickness that her doctor believed was likely West Nile Virus. He was not particularly shocked or urgent about treatment. He simply enouraged the taking of vitamin supplements and plenty of fluids. He made her aware of the possible serious symptoms and urged her to seek assistance if they were seen in any way.

She felt really bad for most of a week and not quite 100% for another week.

I am fully convinced that there is a MUCH broader exposure to this virus than what the media is aware of. It seems to me that this is not much more deadly than the yearly outbreak of influenza. That doesn't mean that it is not serious-- it is just not a weapons grade strain of small pox.

From what I've read, yes, you do get immunity to it. Many people are exposed, develop antibodies and immunity and never know it. Generally you only get REALLY sick or die of you have some other condition that has weakened your immune system.

From the CDC web pages Questions and Answers Updated 08/22/02

Q. If a person contracts West Nile virus, does that person develop a natural immunity to future infection by the virus?

A. It is assumed that immunity will be lifelong; however, it may wane in later years.

My gosh!! I was trying to find which Chicago suburbs the victims lived in and learned the 67-year-old man who died August 10th was from the town next door to where my mom lived til last December.

When I brought her here to live with us this past winter I was concerned she might get West Nile here on Long Island, where we have had the problem for some time.

It sure is spreading quickly.

West Nile Death Count Reaches 11

By BRANDON LOOMIS, Associated Press Writer

An Illinois man who died of West Nile virus— one of 11 nationwide to succumb to the illness this year — was in poor health that would have worsened the effects of the virus, public health officials said.

Sam Basalone, 67, had emphysema and recurring heart troubles, and he had suffered kidney failure in 1996 that required a transplant followed by dialysis, his wife, Shirley Basalone, told The Associated Press.

He also couldn't stand air conditioning, so the retired used car salesman slept on a patio bed at his home in the Chicago suburb of Westmont, which left him exposed to the mosquitoes that carry West Nile virus, she said.

What causes are there for a weakened immune system? Other than old age?

There are a lot of things that have that result, and you'd almost certainly already know it if you had it ;-)

If you've had organ transplants and take anti-rejection drugs, for example, or are on dialysis; chronic lung problems; aids; recovering from serious surgery; or serious cirrhosis of the liver just as a few examples.
