Bush Uses `Wacky' Stump Strategy
By DAVID WASSON , dwasson@tampatrib.com
Aug 17, 2002 -
PALATKA - Departing from his campaign script Friday, Gov. Jeb Bush said Florida's penchant for the bizarre and unexpected requires leadership based on principle rather than politics.
``As wacky as Florida can be, leadership is important,'' Bush told supporters in this northeast Florida mill town after trumpeting his administration's record on education, crime reduction and economic development.
``It's about core principles. And I promise I will stand on what's right.''
...
Turning Florida's anything- can-happen notoriety into a campaign issue has begun appearing in Bush's stump speeches with increasing frequency.
...
``If you read the headlines, you might say, `My goodness,' '' Bush told more than 600 supporters in Starke, where he picked up endorsements from two Democratic sheriffs. ``We have some of the best and more of the strangest and more of the sad things than most places do.
``I've learned in the past four years that being governor isn't just about five-point plans,'' Bush said later. ``It's about core principles, ... and should I be re-elected, I promise you my compass will always point north.''
Those principles, Bush said, include a steadfast faith in God and a willingness to make unpopular decisions without consulting the latest public opinion poll.

I really like this campaign strategy by
Gov. Bush. I think he will connect with even more voters if he keeps using it.

Has Jeb ever expressed interest in a presidential bid?

"JEB" = John Ellis Bush. However, "JEB" is actually a very respected first name in the South, because some military hero who's entire story escapes me at the moment, was in fact named: JEB.

Re your post #4 - A lot of people here on FR have certainly expressed sincere interest in Gov Bush running for president, I can tell you that! :)

I have to look up in this book I read to see if this is the same person I was thinking about; the military hero I read about was, I think, actually named "JEB." But, you may be correct -- the person you mentioned may be the one I also read about. And, in any event, I thank you for the very informative link here! :)

Most people do refer to General Stuart as Jeb. Not just as if they were using his initials.

What do you think of this strategy?I think it is a completely honest assessment of Florida, and true to Bush's core beliefs. I also like the fact that he's running hard against his opponents, even though the Democrat primary hasn't even been held yet. (When is that, by the way?)
He is running a brilliant campaign, and he's going to be re-elected by a huge margin.

That was Gen. J.E.B. Stuart, one of the South's top five or ten (un)-Civil War heroes.

What do you think of this strategy?Well, you didn't ask me...sniff..., but I'll answer anyway. ;-)
I think it plays well in north, and possibly, central Florida, but I don't think we will hear much of it when he campaigns in south Florida, since that is where most of the "wackiness" is. It's a good strategy in those areas where it plays well, and I'm glad to see it.

Like I said, that may be the guy. But, I still think there is another military hero whose birthname was Jeb. I'll have to get back to you. Thanks again for that link - very interesting.
