Pop up ads
24-Aug-2002 | self

Has anyone else been getting pop-up ads while surfing freeRepublic? I have gotten several without leaving this site. The latest is the Official 2002 Smokers survey which asks me to enter my name address and other information to win a flat screen TV. This one poped up after I clicked on the "Messages" link.

Is this inbound activity or programs trying to connect to the Internet. You can't do much about the former, it's a wild internet out there. The latter could be evidence of a problem.

The ad programs that we have been talking about usually don’t show up on firewall logs because they use the browser, which is a trusted program.

I was hit by about eight pop-up ads this afternoon when I clicked on a link that a Freeper provided. Fortunately, I'm quick and I can generally ZAP them before they're fully loaded.

I was going to excoriate the Freeper but then I was afraid that he would just hit me with more.

They say it can support up to 253 users but I'd be damned before I split my ADSL with that many people.

I may be looking into something of this sort when I get around to networking the house next year. I'm starting to get 2.0 GHZ fever and will probably be buying a new machine soon (if I can find one that doesn't have a "pre-loaded" operating system). I'm not ready to make the Linux/Unix jump, but I want win-2000, not XP.

ditto that

ya might wanna look into upgrading to 1.5 Mbps service.
usually only about $20/mo more, and an exponential difference in speed ...

I was looking at samspade.org and find it interesting but have not figured out what to do exactly with the information I get from traceroute and whois and rwhois etc... once I get it. Do you know what I can use that for? Is that who is hitting my machine or is it just the server they are on?

BellSouth gives their DSL at 1.472 for 45$ a month already.

I get it for about 35$ though. Read my profile for further details.

Who their server is on. You'l have to use judgement on what is happening though. It's pretty useless for judging what's trying to get in unless you know it's a hacker but on going out it will give you an idea of what might be trying to connect out.

Well I can tell you my machine is now running faster for sure after I stopped a lot of that traffic. Now I'm trying to find out how to stop some of the other stuff. I was having trouble with forms when I pressed the submit button or went from field to field it was taking a long time to respond. I suspect they where capturing my entries and actions.

This is a security site that I like. It has a lot of useful information and will test your firewall.

Click on "Shields Up", then again on the "Shields Up" link in the "Hot Spots" section

think about building your own box.

I'm considering that. I know a few things I may want (or may not want). I'm leaning towards Intel, but AMD is tempting with their good speed/price ratio. I generally stay 1 notch below "leading edge" as it saves a ton of money.

The machine I run now is a Tiger 350 MHZ, but it looks like they don't build their own any more. SystemMax seems to be their supplier and they are leaning away from Intel. Plus, they (and most others) tend to preload XP which I don't want if you have to do the registration shuffle with MS. Nor will I buy a computer without ALL software on original CD's.

My backup career is electrician. "Wire-pullin' -R- Us".

Seriously, is there any security concern with wireless? Is it like a cordless phone where you don't want to give out your credit card number for fear that someone might hear/read it?
