The Women the Taliban Couldn’t Take - Jane and the real enemies

Jane doesn't like Lisa Beamer.

You thought you'd never see that, eh? Someone who does not like the likes of Lisa Beamer, mother of three, widow of Todd Beamer, who was part of the brave passenger team that saved another designated American terrorist target and potentially hundreds or thousands of innocents from a death similar to those who died at the World Trade Center and the Pentagon last September 11? Beamer is a woman whose husband, prior to helping lead a team of passengers into the hijacked plane's cockpit, said the Lord's Prayer with a 911 operator, who, fortunately, was not a Jane reader.

Lisa Beamer has one overarching problem, though, which her husband clearly shared: She's Christian.

How did she end up in Jane? For their September issue (exquisite timing!), a reporter from this crude women's glossy "infiltrated" a Women of Faith conference. Women of Faith is a harmless — perhaps even spiritually enriching! — nondenominational Christian organization. They hold conferences at which thousands of women hear speakers talk about faith and life, listen to wholesome music, and meet some like-minded sisters. Nothing too dangerous.

Of course, Jane has a different take. Here's the set-up from their anniversary issue: "We infiltrated the sexist church of the Promise Keepers in our first issue. Now, their female flip side is even larger — thanks to whores, refurbished virgins and the militantly stupid."

The Women of Faith may not be everyone's cup of tea, but to Jane they're an enemy. They are the antithesis of Jane's don't-need-God-or-men message.

Here's how Jane writer Ellise Pierce interprets what she saw at the conference:

So, women need men to take care of them, and good men take care of their women. In a nutshell, that's Women of Faith's Promise Keepers-on-estrogen message: Just sit back, relax and give yourself over to a man, mortal or otherwise. As their glossy press kit says, it's "about liberating women — not through politics or legislation, but through faith in God. [It] helps women free themselves of struggles by helping them understand God loves them unconditionally.

Pretty bad stuff, or so Jane thinks. Pierce continues: "Sounds like the devil's work to me, especially when you consider that the organization was started by a man." So the devil is behind it!

More Pierce:

Last year, 375,000 women coughed up $67 a pop to take part, and Women of Faith attendees — including folks like WTC widow Lisa Beamer, who was there last fall — now outnumber Promise Keepers. This year's guest speakers are the missionary team of Heather Mercer and Dayna Curry, who even the Taliban couldn't stand. The soul-saving business, even in a suck-ass economy, is booming. Hallelujah.

There you have it: Christian American women are worse than the Taliban.

The bulk of the article is devoted to making fun of the simple women the Jane writer sat next to at lunch (people who attend schools like Ozark Christian College and Baylor) and the all-female Christian-pop group Point of Grace, whose members have never used drugs or alcohol and were virgins until they married.

Worse than terrorists, beyond a doubt.

Picture these harridans with their contorted hate-filled faces and compare them to the beautiful face of Lisa Beamer. No wonder they are so mean and spitful.

The other side is becoming more and more open about their hate for anything good. They used to mask it in other arguments, now they just let their hate spew out, knowing they have a growing audience for this kind of thing.

Well, I don't think I'd go Nazi, but it's an expression of the war for America's soul, for sure.

Interesting article. Thanks.

I went to Promise Keepers in St. Louis last weekend. It was my 8th PK event. Awesome worship and challenging speakers as usual.

I was thinking as I went in to the stadium that I had not heard the usual drivel protests from NOW et al. this year. As I left on Saturday however there they were, all 6 of them marching in a circle with ridiculous signs.

22,000 worshipping men in the stadium, 6 angry women outside. Where do you think the KMOX cameras were? You guessed it, outside. 6 protesters is news?

Really, it's quite irrelevant if they protest or not. I got blessed inside.

Jane is a magazine for terminally hip (in their own minds) age 20's woman. The vast majority will grow out of it in 10 years once they realize what stooges they've been to the mass media marketing hype and literally selling "hipness" like so much lip gloss. Hipness, like almost every other affectatio is available for a price. If you like trying to hold on to a handful of sand you'll enjoy that for a while, then you'll get bored.

BTW there are men's magazines exactly corrollary to Jane. Marketing disaffection as a commodity is not limited to women.

Affectation is not actual uniqueness or creativity or critical thinking. Magazines such as Jane et al don't go to great lengths to convince us that it is because that is not what they are selling.

The faux disgust or indignation these magazines promote really has nothing to do with disklike of religion or any ideological bent whatsoever. Ideological analysis is completely outside of their scope. The pretense, however, is not.

I'm sure you did, and I wish it really were quite irrelevant, but there were thousands of local news program watchers who got a really warped view of the proceedings courtesy of the local lamestream media. This is why conservative street theater is so effective - the local news channels cover it. The DC FR chapter are the acknowledged masters.

We protested a Cynthia McKinney event back in May with 9 people. We got on two local news channels with the message that "She said Bush intentionally failed to take action to prevent 9/11 so his family's company would profit, and that's BOGUS!" Thousands that wouldn't have heard that message, heard it, because 9 of us showed up, and got covered by local news. As crappy as it is, people do watch the local news.

I don't get it. I was just on the thread where people were saying the US should not give a sh*t what the rest of the world thinks us, but here we're supposed to care what Jane magazine thinks of Lisa Beamer and Christian women?

I don't see anywhere it suggests we 'care', it is just informing us what they are doing. And it all is more proof (as if we needed it) that Ann Coulter is right, they HATE us. Why isn't such speech called hate speech?

'Jane' should keep with it hollow life philosophy and forget everybody else. Talk about the meddlesome ole biddies of yesteryear.
