I appreciate much the post, and your thinking of me. Thanks. And yet:
(1) To respond by trashing Randy Thomasson and Lou Sheldon troubles me. John Stoos, a well-established Republican and conservative activist, seems to regard Thomasson highly, judging by the latter's frequent presence on the former's radio show here in Godforsaken Sacramento. While I haven't named my children after Sheldon, he's certainly been active and aggressive in CA for years. Is "dissing" them really an answer?
(2) What about these direct quotations?
- "In June 2003 I will sign a proclamation declaring Gay Pride Day."
- "I support the continued recognition and involvement of gay Republicans in state party activities...I would back a state party charter for the Log Cabin (Republicans) of California." (I.e. he favors formal recognition of an organization of people united and distinguished only by an sexually perverse act of disgusting immorality.)
- "I believe that the Log Cabin Republicans have provided a voice for members of our party who find that the Democratic party does not represent them on a whole range of issues, whether they be the economy, education, personal liberty, or the environment. I am pleased that the Log Cabin Republicans have made substantial contributions to our party"
- "No, I would not seek to repeal this legislation" (i.e. legislation "facilitating adoption" by couples distinguished by their practice of disgusting, perverted, immoral acts)
- On sexual perverts pretending to be married when, by definition, they cannot be: "I do believe that human beings enter into relationships with other human beings and that some of those relationships are deserving of recognition, not as the equivalent to marriage, or as a substitute for marriage, but in order to allow two individuals who have established a strong caring relationship to more fully function [sic] within that relationship." (I.e. adios to distinctive rights and privileges for the status of marriage.)
- "Yes, in June 2003 I will sign a proclamation declaring Gay Pride Day."
(Most of these quotations sourced on
this thread.)
Liberal media and destructive, self-interested conservatives aside, I find these direct quotations troubling to various degrees. He does seem to tell the poor, perverted souls in the "Log Cabin" club what the want to hear, and then to tell conservatives what they want to hear. "Seem" I say, but "seem" it is, at least.
I'd still likely vote for him over Davis or no-one or a "gesture" vote, but he does seem to be Fonging himself, by these direct quotations. And saying, "But I know he's conservative" or "Randy Thomasson is a mullet-head" doesn't fully bring me to understanding of Simon's own words.
To say nothing of what he said to pro-infanticide groups about abortion (in effect "Don't worry, I'm no threat, I won't change anything; besides, my wife's pro-'choice'!") So far, I've had no help in understanding that at all.
