The GOP challenger shrugs off grim polls as a result of his rival's negative ads.
Calling Gray Davis a "failed governor," Bill Simon released an ethics plan Thursday that he said would "restore accountability and trust in our government."
Davis' Republican challenger unveiled his plan one day after a statewide poll showed considerably more voters trust Davis over Simon when it comes to "maintaining high ethical standards in government."

Oh, so he's admitting that money will win the election instead of admitting that he's running a weak campaign?
To: Carry_Okie
Davis is a shameless, pandering political whore but a smart one.He knew Riordan would be a much tougher opponent so he channeled all his energy and money into discrediting Riordan while ignoring Simon.
NOW he's getting ready to launch a full frontal attack on Simon to marginalize him.And unless there is some HUGE scandal or catastrophe to pin on Davis,he will coast to victory in November and we have four more years of his blatant manipulationas.

Unfortunately the jerk that the White House imposed to run the California Republican Party is not doing his job. Elections in California are EXPENSIVE. You need a lot of money and a lot of grassroots support to win, especially against a professional sleaze like Davis.

Yeah right, Senile Riordan, who lost by double digits in the primary, would have been a tough opponent. Will you share whatever it is that you're smoking?
To: Carry_Okie
Carry_Okie - Cheap shots at Simon is not going to help. DUMPING DAVIS is the #1 priority for every thinking conservative in this pathetic state of ours. Starting this Tuesday, I am devoting myself wholeheartedly to DUMPING DAVIS. Every free minute is going to be spent working to get Bill Simon elected. Join us or get out of the way!!! I'm not going to let you people run down my man, Bill Simon. That's what happened with Lungren and that's how we got "Gay" Davis in the first place. Hello to your darling family. Now move over and let me by! This train is going to run right over you. For victory & freedom!!!

Yeah right, Senile Riordan, who lost by double digits in the primary, would have been a tough opponent. Will you share whatever it is that you're smoking? Exactly. It's time for all of the Riordan supporters and the folks who think Simon isn't conservative enough to decide WHO DO YOU WANT TO BE THE NEXT GOVERNOR? It is going to be either DAVIS or SIMON. It will not be RIORDAN or anyone else, that's reality. I'm not saying that you have to respect Simon; or like him; or agree with him. Just decide whether you think that it will be better to have four more years of Davis.

Davis has as spent $25 million on attack ads and Davis' low popularity has remained constant. His attacks aren't working as well as you'd expect. Bill Simon said "the gloves are off" and he's striking back. Please be patient and don't give up. The polls are all over the place. We have until October 21st to register new voters. I'm dedicating myself to that effort. Whatever it takes to DUMP 'GAY' DAVIS! Go, Simon!!!!!!!

That was no cheap shot. I was addressing a an apparent case of denial on Simon's part. Facing facts is the only way to learn to improve and enact the changes that he must in order to win. So far, he has run a poor campaign. It's a fact. Bill Simon is accountable for that.
That does not mean that I don't support his candidacy, quite the contrary. Rather than fund the Party and have Gerry Parsky get his dirty fingers on the money, rather than send it to the campaign so that it can go down an expensive media rathole to enrich Sal Russo, I just got off the phone to a printer who will be running my very own bumper sticker campaign:
I'm working on a "Dump Davis" bumper sticker appropriate for dump trucks.
Each would be 5-1/2" x 21-1/2", installed in pairs, top and bottom according to specific markets.
They will have appropriate leaders for each sector...
Need a Job?
Dump Davis!
Stuck in Traffic?
Dump Davis!
Lousy Schools?
Dump Davis!
Taxes High?
Dump Davis!
Power Out?
Dump Davis!
Sick of Crooks?
Dump Davis!
And so on...
I've already bought the paper and worked out the distribution through clandestine channels. I've also written speeches that have been gratefully accepted by his writers and they were asking for more.
So you see, rather than alienating his base to get elected, rather than spend buckets of money on expensive media while cowering before the national Party bigwigs, rather than try to walk the line between principles and truisms, Simon could learn to communicate from his heart how conservative principles work for opportunity constituencies and thus avoid all this waffling that costs him his principal asset: the appearance of integrity (which is why Davis and the mediots went after that legal case with pitchforks).
We ought to be helping him do that. Mindless cheerleading won't work.

Riverman94610 signed up 2002-08-28. Riverman, you can go back to the Davis Campaign whence you came and tell them that stupid truisms don't fly here.
To: Saundra Duffy
You folks are amazing. I know that we on this thread (and throughout FR, for that matter) are supporting Bill Simon's candidacy, but the man's MIA. I'm expecting that sometime soon the freeway signs will be flashing an Amber Alert for our guy.
Seriously, where is Bill Simon? Although entrenched in office and leading in the polls, "The Ol' Gray Davis" is quite "beatable" and Simon should be hammering him and his policies and his scandals each and every day from yesterday until election day on the many radio talk shows throughout California who would welcome him on the air. And for free, yet!
But no. The brilliant minds running his campaign (I'd characterize them as "morons" but that would be insensitive and condescending to the "moron community") appear to have adopted the strategy of waiting ... waiting until the last few weeks of the campaign (at which point we're soon arriving) to launch a full-out attack against Davis. Of course that means Davis has been able to preserve and consolidate his enormous campaign war chest and the power and influence of his office to launch a highly concentrated counterattack during those same few weeks. I fear we'd be speaking German if these people were the commanding officers in WWII.
Can you tell I'm frustrated? Good God, folks, my grandmother could beat Gray Davis ... and she's dead! What do you think it will take to get our candidate excited about his own campaign, and why do you think he is keeping such a low profile? Seriously, I'd like to know what you think of Bill Simon's campaign strategy thusfar.

Niether will dragging dirty laundry out in the open or bolting to a third party.
The former only hurts the effort, the latter is an outright betrayal of all the principles that I'd stand for.

Niether will dragging dirty laundry out in the open or bolting to a third party. Are you assuming that I have bolted?
I haven't, as is obvious. I think that would be stupid.
The former only hurts the effort, the latter is an outright betrayal of all the principles that I'd stand for.
Apparently you stand for "win at all costs." Thanks, but I don't call that "principled," in part because I don't think you'll win that way. I would say that the evidence suggests that my observation of the political realities is correct.
If your voice was being shut out by the "professionals" so that they can derail this campaign (as I predicted that they would in March), if they are using money to coerce the candidate into making poor political choices, would you not a) make every effort to get that candidate to correct that error and b) prevent the "professionals" from succeeding the way they did it to Schundler?
Rove is the problem here and Russo/Marsh knows who releases the checks.
To: Carry_Okie
Me from the Davis campaign? What a joke.Sorry to give you and evilsmoker a sad reality check like I did but the truth is the truth.
Yes,Simon tromped Riordan by double digits in the California PRIMARY.Hello? The primary always brings out more conservative GOP voters so naturally Simon would win.I am talking about the general election where Riordan would have broad support among more moderate and even relatively conservative Democrats who are sick of Davis's machinations.
Now on the issue of Riordan not being a "real"Republican, you have a point. But this is 2002 California, not the 1966 world of mostly white, middle class folks who elected Reagan.Riordan recognized this new reality and while Simon is trying to reach out to the so called "minority communities"methinks the effort will fall flat.

I like your bumper sticker ideas! I went to the Simon Sacramento campaign hqtrs today (19th & K) to ask permission for NorCal FReeper Chapter to have a meeting there. Anyhoo - they said GREAT! We're gonna have a CA Chapter contest to see who can get the most voters registered. More to follow. We have until Oct 21st to get folks signed up to vote. They can't vote for Simon if they're not registered. That's my focus. Nothing else matters if we can't get Simon elected! For victory & freedom!!!
To: Saundra Duffy
They're not really bumper stickers. They are moving signs. A dump truck is at least eight feet tall. At 11 X 22 the signs will be visible for twenty car lengths. Think of it, 95° in LA, ten miles an hour on the 405...
There it is in front of you, for minutes at a time...
Stuck in Traffic?
Dump Davis!
