But he has privately grown more frustrated, and now, sources close to Powell tell Time, he has a firm plan for his exit: he will step down at the end of President Bush’s current term.

If true...

SEE YA!

The aide says Powell’s view of the matter is, “I did what my heart told me to do. I got (Bush) here and set him up. I did the best I could do.”

You miss the point, everybody. If Powell set Bush up as President, he has a right to be upset at Bush's failure to toe the line.

Powell has shown himself to be a wuss, both during Desert Storm (he wouldn't go after Saddam), and in the current "war on terror."
Oh, please. He, and General Schwartzkoff, were ordered to halt operations by GW Bush's father! You make it sound like he had a choice, like maybe he was told to "go git 'em" and didn't want to.
You may not like him but at least be accurate.

General Eisenhower was also at the bottom of his class. Would you deny his greatness too?

Eisenhower wasn't at the bottom of his class.

He graduated 61st in a class of 164.

Seems you get your facts wrong.

Thank you for setting the record straight.

BTW - Seen any suspicious (terrorists) lately?

Ever wonder where they got their pilot training?

Just setting the record straight!

No, I think General Powell has already used the term "evil" to refer to certain "conservative" elements in his "own" party. Do you doubt the general's loyalty to his "party"?

Seems like there is a lot of Grrr-woof-woofery in this thread from a lot of folks who have never served a day in the Armed Forces (or who don't want to admit that they served).

Don't take this the wrong way, but you don't get to be hard core by running your mouths in middle age in lieu of getting cold, tired, hungry, dirty and miserable in your youth.

So in your version of democracy, only a veteran has the right to criticize Powell.

Powell is ill-equipped to lead the U.S. to war when necessitated.

It is time for War, Beck, and I couldn't care less if you like him.

If you're tacitly referring to ERAU, say it. The fact that the FBI crawled all over both campuses and found not one shred of evidence linking the school to the terrorists rests the case. If you want anymore information call (386) 226-6000 and ask for the VP of Public Relations, she'll straighten you out.

Also, Taco-Bell, I don't see any reference to military service on your profile. What's the problem?

Eisenhower graduated 61st in a class of 164. That means he graduated in the upper half of his class, not at the bottom. Further, Eisenhower's class was known as the "The Class the Stars Fell on" because a disproportionate number of the members of that class became generals. So, Eisenhower had to compete against some pretty competent people and he did fairly well in the competition.

See Link

With regard to Powell, he seems to have problems with understanding that bad guys like Hussein are not mollified by soft words.

No, just people who have some facts and not just a bunch of media herded emotions.

Pierre Trudeau once told Canadians to hold their noses and vote for him because they had no other realistic choice. Bush needs someone like Powell to help hold off the baying leftie press. He could be "holding his nose" over it, but who cares? And calling off Desert Storm was GHW Bush's call, not Powell's.

caveat emptor

How can you say that? The media is perpetually giving Powell sympathetic coverage. The current article from Time is just one example of that. Compare Powell's coverage to people like Rumsfeld, who are called hawks or hard-right conservatives, or Gaffney, who the article refers to as a 'far-right' analyst, as if Gaffney is some ex-KKK member.

How would you possibly know "not one shred of evidence" was found?

BTW - Didn't it seem suspicious to you that a great disproportionate number of students were of ME backgroud?
