We have little more than a week left to get the word out across this great land we love and call the United States of America.
On Wednesday, September 11, 2002, all Americans who will be driving a motor vehicle are being asked to do so with their HEADLIGHTS ON.
Contact the newspaper in your town or at your school. Call the television and radio stations in your area. Inform your elected representatives. Pass the word at your place of employment. Tell your family, friends and neighbors. Send this e-mail to people. Discuss this event in chatrooms and on message boards.
No explanation is needed as to why we are commemorating September 11 in this fashion. However, we hope to pay respect to the victims of that day, display our nation's solidarity, and, show support for our men and women in the Armed Forces.
"Let's roll" down the roads and highways with our headlights on this September 11!

Better yet, let's drop the big one:
No one likes us
I don't know why.
We may not be perfect
But heaven knows we try.
But all around even our old friends put us down.
Let's drop the big one and see what happens.
We give them money
But are they grateful?
No they're spiteful
And they're hateful.
They don't respect us so let's surprise them;
We'll drop the big one and pulverize them.

JD, much as I appreciate your spirit, there is nothing lamer than a "let's all drive with our headlights on" movement. Many of the newer cars have headlights that stay on all the time anyway, and nobody will notice a few extra older cars with lights on.

To: JDinz
Um. Suggestion?
Let's do absolutely nothing so as to tell them "the worst you could do is *nothing* in our eyes!"

Help! Help! I'm being repressed! I can't particpate because my headlights are always on when the car is in gear! Now I'm being excluded and it's not fair! Waaaaaaahhh!!! Waaaaaaaaaahhh! etc... etc... ad nauseum...

We could all drive at night with our headlights off . . . now that might draw some attention!
To: JDinz
Turning on headlights will increase electrical load and thus gas consumption, putting extra money in the hands of the Saudis. Talk about unintended consequences.

What about the "let's do nothing" movement? I predict more dead batteries on September 11th than ever before. I've read about it happening on FR in past symbolic gesture movements.
To: be131
You say unintended consequences, I say conspiracy.

We tried that once, going "infrared" as we called it... we learned that no headlights on, red interior light on, and a dark interstate = lots of unwanted attention...
To: Chad Fairbanks
Where'd ya get the red interior light? . . . Sounds cool . . .
To: JDinz
I run my headlights all the time, night or day. Incidentally, so do most GM vehicles built in the last 3-4 years, or more. It's a poor way to demonstrate solidarity, kinda like 'If you oppose poverty, wear a heavy coat this winter.'

haha!

What about taping a silk flower next to or under your USA flag, in a lower portion of a window?

Just do yourself a favour, and don't ask what a bunch of teenage future engineers would do to customize a '76 Chevy Impala in 1986... ;0)

Back in my college days, some gay activist group would organize "gay blue jean day" every year. You were supposed to wear blue jeans if you supported gay rights. In this era, roughly 90% of the students wore blue jeans most days. Since nobody really paid attention or cared, gay blue jean day was no different than any other, and the organizers could claim an empty and meaningless "success".
