My Letter to Congressmen Supporting War on Iraq

Posted on 09/08/2002 2:30:46 PM PDT by JediJones

I just wrote and sent this letter to my congressmen asking them to support the war on Iraq and defending the case. I think it's important we do this now that the issue is apparently going to Congress...

Dear Congressman,

I am writing to let you know that I will be paying attention to your decision on the issue of war with Iraq when election time comes around. I believe it is vitally important for peace and security in the world that the tyranny of Saddam Hussein be dealt with as quickly as possible through military action and regime change. Our nation pledged to fight a war on terrorism last September. Failing to deal with Iraq now would be tantamount to giving up and surrendering in that war after we have barely started.

The hesitancy from some quarters to conduct this military action does not make our country more secure. It only makes us look weak, cowardly, vulnerable, and hurts our position as a leader in the world. Those who say we need to wait for evidence of a specific threat do not understand the nature of the problem. The cease fire after the Gulf War required inspectors precisely because we did not want to be subjected to the uncertainty of whether Saddam was rearming or not. That uncertainty itself, not specific evidence, is all the cause for continuing and completing the war with Iraq that we need. The burden of proof is on Saddam, not on us.

If we don't face this problem now, Iraq's weapons may be shared with terrorists or they may threaten our troops in a fight against future Iraqi aggression. But regime change relates to the war on terrorism in a more fundamental way. Introducing democracy and freedom to the Arab world is the best thing we can do to cure the raging disease that has produced modern terrorism, one of the gravest threats to our country's security we have ever seen. The Arab people need to be able to participate in their own governments. The totalitarian propaganda that blames the U.S. and Israel for their problems every day needs to be replaced with a free and open press. Only when these things happen will these societies begin to direct their energy inward to solve their own problems rather than outward to attack us and other perceived enemies.

Regime change in Iraq is only one step in a longer path towards victory. Iran, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Syria to name a few must be taken care of one way or another as well. Considering the comprehensive effort required, it is all the more discouraging that some people are already reluctant to face Iraq, the most glaring example of tyranny and terror in the region. It calls into question whether our nation still has the kind of resolve that catapulted us to victory in World War II. This new war is no different in that it is a fight against corrupt cultures, societies, and governments, not just against rogue individuals or small groups, as those who succumb to wishful thinking would prefer to believe. If we blink, if we tire, if we falter now, we only risk inviting still more unimaginable acts of terrorism, causing pain and suffering for our people that would dwarf the sacrifice required to continue and win this war.

However, I think you're being way too kind about the arabs.. They don't really deserve freedom, or life..

I do have family members serving overseas in the armed forces. I'm proud of them and their contributions to our nation's defense. Cowardice and expecting other people to do our dirty work for us is not what made us a great nation.

Good letter with a great idea. I'll be doing the same and I will volunteer to take the place of AzJP's kids.

One can be proud of family members, friends, etc, for joining the military without always agreeing with the leaders that send them into conflict. The patriotic act of joining to defend our nation should not be construed to mean one is always backing a President and his choices of where/how we fight.

I, too, have a loved one in the armed services. I'm extremely proud of him and the job he does. That being said, I do have some serious concerns about US preparedness to start an attack on Iraq. I seriously hope that our Commander in Chief doesn't send our troops over there until its time.

Thanks and Good Luck!

My family bled way too much in Viet Nam to ever again trust Big Brother. And then most of us lived long enough to see the bad guys take that country anyway.

Super letter!

I voted today at vote.com. They want to know if we should bomb Iraq and go after Saddamn. I voted yes, and 76% others voted yes, as well.

My family bled in WWII. There were none of us left for Viet Nam. (Except me and I was too young.) My point is that there is always a shortage of patriots and always too many families reduced to one or zero. I suspect it will always be that way.

In shared sadness,

MTC
