Truce may calm neighbor (Editor urges white woman to try and appease Black Panther neighbor)

Dear Betty: There is nothing more distressing than when neighbors do not get along. Your neighbor's behavior is lewd, crude and vulgar. He seems like the kind of person I would avoid at all costs. My first reaction was to suggest that you move and pray your new neighbors will be more understanding. It seems obvious the problem stems from the number of cats that prowl your neighbor's yard. I have no idea how many cats you have. If you live in the city with three or more cats in one household, it is stretching the limits of being a good neighbor. If you do not want to move, I recommend the following approach: Find a person to mediate with your neighbor in your behalf. Suggest a truce, with the promise all will be civil with the following agreements: * You will own no more than two cats at a time. * You will promise to keep your cats in your yard, and if your cats cause damage to your neighbor's property, you will make restitution. * You will not call the police without first discussing the problem. * The neighbor will act civil, park his cars appropriately and do away with the rat poison. Neighbors do not have to like one another, but should respect each other's rights. Please write again, and let me know the results.

He has called me a big, fat, ugly white woman. In the next breath, he sneered at me while making a sexual gesture and reference. He told me on another occasion to get ready to move, because I won't have my house much longer because the Black Panthers are going to run me out.

Imagine if a black woman wrote this guy a letter saying a white guy killed two of her cats and told her to watch out because the Klan would come and get her. Imagine then that this editor told her to try and compromise with this guy. Do you think this editor would still have a job?

If I was this old lady there would be covert acts of vandalism going on. I've never been in a full blown war with a neighbor but I would not tolerate this crap from someone. After the second cats death I would have made sure that every green thing on this guys property turned dead. Being old her property value isn't important I'm sure but imagine how much of a hit a guy take in property value when his lawn becomes a wasteland for several months.

Her family is multi-racial means nothing to a thug, but many liberals think that is their ticket when dealing with black thugs. It means nothing to them.

If she doesn't want to do what TJ said, and I doubt she has the stomach to do it, she needs to sell her house pronto and move. Even if she does acquire a firearm he is most likely stronger than her. She likes cats, is peaceful, a nice neighbor. He's a mean racist.

Well, the neighborhood fight sounds like a whopper. But when you lay all the racist and Black Panther crap aside, what you have is a typical multiple cat owner who thinks it is ok for her cats to use her neighbors yard as a sand box, a hunting lodge, a cheap motel and a nursery for the resulting numerous offsping who take over your boat, your camper or any other place they can crawl into and trash it!

They make leashes for cats too!IMHO.

Why should an old woman have to deal with a situation like this? Her children should come to her aid and help her move out of there. There are people who just hate cats and when they see them on the road they like to run them over.

This 'person' doesn't have a problem with her because of her cats, he has a problem with her because she is WHITE. Calling her a fat, ugly, WHITE woman, and threatening to have the Black Panthers force her to move out has nothing to do with her cats, and everything to do with the fact that he is a racist pig. If it was an elderly black wonam with cats, he would have no issue, most likely.

Yes, especially considering that the cat smell is kinda permanent once they perform their little visit.

And while we're at it, how about the neighbor's dog that takes on the role of alarm clock at about 3am daily? Some petowners can be very rude and ignorant, and try to always make us out to be the bad guys if we diasapprove of the intrusions of their little beasts. Kinda like liberals, now that I think of it.

That said, this woman needs to keep her cats inside. Yes her neighbor sounds like a dirtbag, but there is no excuse for letting your pets roam all around the neighborhood. Cats can be one hell of a nusince (sp?) My very nice old lady neighbor has cats and a fresh litter and they run all over the place including using my yard for a toilet. Soon I'm sure they will start marking their territory on the wheels of my truck.

To those annoyed with careless pet owners who have replied to this thread, I have the following to say: Do you really think this woman's infarctions come even close to what her neighbor has done in return?! If you do, have you completely lost all sense of reality?! There are several annoying domestic animals in my parents' neighborhood, but my parents, being civilized people have lodged complaints with the neighborhood association. Dad has not put rat poison in their dishes, and he certainly hasn't harrassed and stalked our neighbors, however often he might grumble in private about the offending beasts. For heaven's sake!

I'm much more agreeable with a full night's sleep. Unfortunately, since the neighbor's dogs wake me up every night of my life, I tend to get a little grumpy sometimes. So go pound sand, and keep your stinkin' animals (and their sounds and smells) off of my PRIVATE PROPERTY.
