NAPLES, Fla. A bomb squad detonated a suspicious package early Friday morning in a car along Alligator Alley, the main East-West highway crossing the Everglades, after an all-night search for two cars thought to be involved in possible terrorist activity.
People in two vehicles were detained after a possible terrorist threat, police said.
Police in Florida and Georgia searched overnight for the two vehicles after a waitress in Calhoun, Ga., in the northwestern part of that state, told police she overheard three men of Middle Eastern or Hispanic descent discussing terrorist plans Wednesday night.
The waitress said the men were talking about amounts of explosives and warned that Americans would "cry on 9/13," said Miami Police Lt. Bill Schwartz, quoting from the Georgia advisory.
"They were mourning on 9/11 and there will be mourning again on 9/13" and "we don't have enough to bring it down," the men said, according to the woman who notified the police.

Not arrested, but detained. I hope they remain detained for some time, unless something else comes to light. This is the tough part of our war against terrorism... right here in our own country. I wonder if they came into the US illegally? Then they would not have any rights as US citizens.

Why do the call it a "suspicious package" after it gets detonated...why don't they just call it "a bomb"?

Just goes to show those "broad" alerts aren't so useful after all. I commend this waitress, she may be the next hero in this battle against evil incarnate. We must all stay alert, the enemy is indeed among us.

sorry, that should have read "useless" not "useful"

Either these people are really, really stupid or this is a diversion. Blabbing at a restaurant, blow through a tollbooth... They were trying to get "caught".

Maybe knowing we were on orange alert made the waitress more alert than normal? Furether, all that TV coverage of the 9-11 anniversary UNDOUBTEDLY made her more alert.

This may be real deal. Cops here going balistic. Dog gave positive hit on car and interstate closed down! Expect much more on this during day.
If cars were Eastbound, then they had not been to Miami yet. If they were Westbound, they had been to Maimi and were then exiting upwind.
If going to MIA from Georgia, route is suspicions. Regular route would be via the Florida RONALD REAGAN Turnpike! Much shorter, easier, but has tolls entire length, and these ragheads ran a toll booth on the Interstate, so who knows.

There was no secondary explosion after they detonated the first package (a backpack ??) -- still not sure what it was

You brought up the same points that spouse and I were just discussing.

Did the suspicious package look like a ballot box in Broward County?

Not all terrorists are well trained or well organised. I don't see how terrorists benefit from this event. We are being taught to be more alert. We are feeling more victorious. We are given another reason to take this war more seriously. And they are detained and under close investigation.
As for diverting manpower, it would take a lot more than this to seriously drain our resources, just an insect hitting the windshield.
However, I don't blame you for being incredulous at their stupidity.

Have they raised us yet to red? If they can truly verify strikes planned for today shouldn't we be at red? I don't even know where to check. Is there a website that gives our current status?
