Britain to fight Saddam on three fronts (Great graphics)

Geoff Hoon, the Defence Secretary, arrives back from Kuwait this morning with full details of what America wants Britain to provide towards the forces lined up against Iraq.

Although officials continue to insist that no decision has been made on whether to go ahead, they admit that contingency plans are in place.

The Ministry of Defence has set up a Target Planning Group to select targets for attacks by US and RAF aircraft on the no-fly zones in Iraq.

Senior defence sources confirmed that Tornado GR4s patrolling the zones would be equipped with precision-guided Storm Shadow missiles to provide "more punch".

Gen Tommy Franks, the US commander in the region, is known to want an extremely strong force of about 250,000 - including a British armoured division - to attack Iraq on three fronts.

Donald Rumsfeld, the US defence secretary, insists that all possible options must be examined and that Gen Franks should think "out of the box" to come up with plans, but a full-scale invasion is seen as the only realistic choice.

That would require three thrusts, one by US airborne troops, probably accompanied by elements of the Colchester-based 16 Air Assault Brigade, to occupy Kurdish-controlled northern Iraq.

British and US special forces are already on the ground in the region and US air force engineers have already relaid three large air bases.

The second thrust would be an amphibious assault on the south via Bubiyan island by a US Marine Corps expeditionary force, possibly including the Royal Marines 3 Commando Brigade.

This would be bound to involve the Royal Navy, since the area is heavily mined and America has no specialist mine-seeking ships. It is also expected to involve the aircraft carrier Ark Royal and the amphibious assault carrier Ocean.

Ark Royal is on its way to the Mediterranean, where it will be joined by the destroyers Southampton and Edinburgh prior to carrying out amphibious landing exercises with other Nato forces.

The third and final phase will be a classic armoured advance from Kuwait into southern Iraq by five armoured divisions, one of them the Army's main armoured force, 1 Armoured Division, based at Herford in Germany.

It will be stripped of one of its brigades, 20 Armoured Brigade, much of which is currently serving in Kosovo and Bosnia to form a two-brigade "light" division.

The most famous of the two brigades is probably 7th -Armoured Brigade, the "Desert Rats", based in Bergen-Hohne and Fallingbostel. The brigade was due to take part in an exercise in Poland but this was cut down to a single battalion in anticipation of a possible deployment to Kuwait.

The other brigade will be 4th Armoured Brigade, which is based at Osnabruck and Munster, and like 7th Armoured Brigade took part in the 1991 Gulf war.

Kuwaiti government officials confirmed yesterday that Britain planned to deploy a "light" armoured division there in the coming months.

This looks like pretty much "in the box" thinking to me. When this campaign is over, I think it will be studied in military academies for many years to come.

Kennedy, Leahy, Daschle, Feinstein, Schumer and ilk, will ask for Kofi's UN wisdom on how to disuade our president and the American people from taking action.

Kofi will scratch his ass, mumble, and then buy a few more $500.00 suits.

Lieberman will vote yes once Bush gets all the votes he needs. Gore would vote yes, but he holds no office. McCain would attack anybody/yes!

Kerry is looking for his Viet Nam medals he threw away in the Tidal Basin... if he can't find them, he'll vote yes.

HRC will be absent.

Other than that, GWB rolls!

I'd be willing to bet actual money that there will be no mass attack by five armoured divisions. It'd take too long to set up.

The article says, "Kuwaiti government officials confirmed yesterday that Britain planned to deploy a "light" armoured division there in the coming months."

I'm betting that the armoured thrust will consist of that light division plus whatever U.S. armor is already on the ground in the area. I understand that there is already a substantial amount of armor in the area already, in the prepositioned forces formations.

$500 suits? What planet are you on. Maybe they cost $500 in the Eisenhower Administration.

I'm reminded of an old movie... was it Billy Jack? Where he slowly took his boots off (he always took his boots off reeal slow) and then stood in front of the bad guy and told him exactly how he was going to deconstruct him. "First I'm gonna do this and then I'm gonna do that and this and that etc." And then the punch line: "And you know what? There's not a damn thing you can do about it." Thwack!

It was a very satisfying scene.

If Putin will help us, or stay out of our way, I don't give a crap what he does in Georgia.

Nor, for that matter, do I care what the Turks do in Kurdistan.

For the Georgians and the Kurds: Sin loy, minoy.

The president's wonderful speech to the UN was partly to bring home to the "UN warns US not to unilaterally attac Iraq" crowd that we will go in WITH your blessing, or WITHOUT it.

You know...speaking of the British media, it was the British media that spilled the truth that US and British Spec-Ops teams were in in place and operational Afghanistan two weeks before the American media began giving official reports. Luckily, that too-early blurb from the British Press Association was ignored by the rest of the world...including the American news media.

"That is the point. Putin doesn't need permission. He does, however, need an EXPLANATION of why he is moving troops into Georgia."

Maybe monitoring, as well as supportive action to keep the bad guys from crossing the border into Georgia to link up with terrorist cells there.

Actually one bullet wouldn't do it...leadership would then fall to his son, who's by all reports Sadaam X 10 on the scale of crazy. And two bullet wouldn't do it either, because then you leave the entire Iraqi WMD infrastructure (not to mention the weapons themselves) intact for the next strongman in Iraq to inherit.

And for that matter, even if you offed every possible strongman with one bullet times however many qualify as such, you still don't get the strategic master-stroke of placing a very large U.S/British force astride the borders of Iran and Syria, to destabilize those Islamic terrorist tyrannies.

If we lose some of your valiant Marine brothers (as we sadly and undoubtedly will), they will die this time for the cause of destroying fundamentalist Islamic power in the forms of these three tyrannical states, which are doing everything in their power to see a redux of 9/11/01, only of a far greater magnitude. In other words: The cause is a great one.
